A bus driver was fatally stabbed while operating his vehicle in Glew, a town in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina last week. The assailant, identified as Jesús de Ojeda Calipsto, 57, allegedly attacked the driver in an act of revenge stemming from a past romantic entanglement involving Calipsto’s wife.
Leonardo Sebastián Figueroa, 43, was driving bus number 101 on route 506 when the incident occurred. Security camera footage from inside the bus captured the entire attack, showing Calipsto, wearing a surgical mask, approaching Figueroa and engaging him in conversation before suddenly producing a sharp object from a bag.
The video shows Calipsto stabbing Figueroa twice in the right side of his abdomen. After the attack, Calipsto quickly exited the moving vehicle through an open door. Figueroa, visibly shocked and in pain, managed to stop the bus and close the door before examining his bloodied hand.
Despite being transported to Cecilia Grierson Hospital alive, Figueroa succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Medical staff attempted life-saving measures and performed multiple surgical interventions, but were unable to save the driver’s life.
Authorities have ruled out robbery or personal gain as motives for the attack. According to law enforcement sources who spoke with LA NACION, a 30-year-old woman visited the police station in Almirante Brown following the incident. She reportedly informed officers that the perpetrator was her husband and disclosed a past romantic relationship with Figueroa.
Investigators believe Calipsto had recently learned of this alleged affair between his wife and Figueroa, which reportedly occurred some time ago. This revelation is thought to be the catalyst for the violent confrontation.
Officers from the 7th Glew police station apprehended Calipsto just blocks from where he had fled the bus. Witness accounts aided in his swift capture. Calipsto now faces a charge of aggravated homicide by treachery.
The brutal attack has sent shockwaves through the local community and the public transportation sector. Colleagues of Figueroa paid emotional tributes to the slain driver, with many bus operators initially halting services in protest of the violence. However, the bus company later announced that all services would resume normal operations later in the week.
The use of security cameras on public buses, while unable to prevent this tragedy, proved crucial in providing evidence for the investigation and subsequent arrest.
