Football Team Shocks Fans by Firing Coach

The New York Jets have parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh just five games into the 2024 season. The decision came after the Jets fell to a 2-3 record following a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, October 6, 2024, in London, England, a disappointing start for a team hoping to end a 13-season playoff drought.

Team owner Woody Johnson announced the decision Tuesday, marking the first time in his 25-year tenure that he has fired a head coach mid-season.“This is one of the most talented teams that has ever been assembled by the New York Jets,” Johnson said during a conference call with reporters. “I wanted to give this team the most opportunity to win this season. I feel that we had to go in a different direction and that’s why I did that today.”

Saleh, who joined the Jets in 2021, leaves with a 20-36 record, the lowest winning percentage (.357) of any Jets coach who led the team for at least 40 games. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will step in as the interim head coach, starting with the upcoming Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills. Ulbrich, who has been with the team since 2021, will be responsible for steering the team through the remainder of the season.

Johnson conveyed his confidence in Ulbrich, emphasizing that he could bring the necessary positivity to the team. Saleh, the NFL’s first Muslim head coach, shared a heartfelt message after his departure. He expressed his deep love and appreciation for each of the players and extended gratitude to the Jets’ fan base. He also reflected on the pleasure of calling New York home and cherishing the memories created there.

The firing comes after high expectations were set following the acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in April 2023. However, injuries and a lack of offensive cohesion have hampered the team’s progress. Johnson was adamant that while he had spoken to Rodgers about the situation, the decision to dismiss Saleh was ultimately his own.

Saleh’s tenure saw the Jets struggle to establish consistent success. Despite some improvements, the team never achieved a winning season under his leadership. With Ulbrich now at the helm, the Jets face a crucial test as they prepare to take on a divisional rival and try to bring their record back to .500.
