Vice President Kamala Harris has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for their handling of recent hurricane relief efforts, accusing them of prioritizing politics over people in need.
“It’s profound and it is the height of irresponsibility and frankly callousness,” Harris said during an appearance on “The View” on Tuesday, October 8. “This is so consistent about Donald Trump. He puts himself before the needs of other people.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the Biden administration is diverting Federal Emergency Management Agency funds intended for hurricane victims to support undocumented immigrants. At a rally in Michigan, he stated, “Kamala spent all of her FEMA money—billions of dollars—on housing for illegal migrants. They stole the FEMA money just like they stole it from a bank so they could give it to their illegal immigrants who they want to have vote for them.”
These assertions have been debunked by officials. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson clarified that “The Shelter and Services Program (SSP) is a completely separate, appropriated grant program” and “is not associated in any way with FEMA’s disaster-related authorities or funding streams.”
Harris expressed concern over the impact of spreading misinformation during a crisis. “I fear that he really lacks empathy on a very basic level to care about the suffering of other people,” she said. “Lives are literally at stake right now. Somebody would be playing political games for the sake of himself.”
The Vice President also addressed tensions with Governor DeSantis, who reportedly declined her calls regarding preparations for Hurricane Milton, stating that the outreach “seemed political.” DeSantis claimed he had not received calls from Harris about previous hurricane relief efforts in the state.
Harris responded that it wasn’t an issue about politics or partisanship. She emphasized the importance of unity during times of disaster.
Trump’s history of making false claims during disaster situations has drawn criticism from various quarters. Officials worry that his statements may undermine public trust in federal assistance programs. FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security have reiterated that disaster relief funds remain available and are not being diverted.
Despite the political tensions, Harris affirmed her commitment to supporting all states affected by natural disasters, regardless of their leaders’ political affiliations. “This is a time for us to come together and focus on the people who need our help,” she said.
As communities in Florida and North Carolina continue to recover from the impacts of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, the administration urges residents to seek assistance and assures that federal resources are available. The dissemination of accurate information remains a priority to ensure effective relief efforts.
Officials are particularly concerned that misinformation could hinder recovery efforts. A FEMA spokesperson emphasized that spreading false information during a disaster can have serious consequences.
Harris’ criticisms highlight the ongoing political divisions that can complicate disaster response efforts. The administration continues to advocate for bipartisan cooperation to support affected communities effectively.
