Hi-Hop Rapper Dies at 52

The hip-hop world and the Brooklyn community, New York City are mourning the death of Ka, a respected figure in the underground rap scene. Ka, whose real name was Kaseem Ryan, passed away unexpectedly at 52 on October 12, 2024, according to a statement from his family.

Raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka became a significant voice in the underground rap scene. His music career started in the 1990s with the rap group Natural Elements, and he launched his first solo album “Iron Works” in 2008. In a previous interview, Ka shared his commitment to his music and work, stating, “I have a full-time job, and I work all the time. I try to keep that kinda low.”

Outside of his music, Ka dedicated 20 years of his life to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), serving as a captain. He was among the first responders during the September 11 attacks. Balancing his role as a firefighter and an artist, Ka once told the media in 2013, “I never wanted to be ‘The Rapping Captain.’ I try to be a good firefighter. And when I come home, I try to make some dope music.”

Ka’s last album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” was released in September, continuing his unique style of blending raw storytelling with intricate themes. His music was often characterized by its blend of gritty realism and deep introspection.

Ka is survived by his mother, sister, and wife, Mimi Valdé, a renowned journalist and producer. Valdé has had a long and successful career, including her tenure as editor-in-chief at VIBE and her recent role as a producer on Pharrell Williams’ new autobiography film, “Piece By Piece.” According to reports, Valdé shared a poignant message on social media, expressing her endless love for Ka, and promising to meet him again.
