Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is under pressure to secure funds for critical repairs on his longtime residence, the Royal Lodge, located in Windsor Great Park. With a deadline set for the end of 2024, Andrew must demonstrate he can finance approximately $2.6 million in refurbishments or face eviction from the historic property.
The sprawling estate, valued at around $37 million, has been Andrew’s home since 2003 under a 75-year lease agreement with the Crown Estate. However, maintaining the 30-room mansion has proven costly, particularly after King Charles III withdrew financial support. The decision to halt the $3.8 million annual funding previously allotted for Andrew’s security costs has placed the Duke in a challenging position. Andrew has turned to less expensive security options, which he hoped would help him remain at the Royal Lodge.
Andrew’s struggle to meet financial obligations at the property has raised questions about his future living arrangements. King Charles has proposed Frogmore Cottage as a potential alternative. The cottage, previously occupied by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is a smaller and more economical alternative to the Royal Lodge, with a high upkeep cost. However, Andrew has expressed reluctance, reportedly declining the offer multiple times, as the cottage is significantly smaller than his current residence
Renovation efforts are underway, with Andrew said to have spent more than $250,000 on temporary roof repairs. However, this work has been judged as inadequate. According to a royal insider, the Crown Estate seeks confirmation that he can undertake a full renovation rather than just minor fixes.
Sources suggest King Charles’s patience is waning. Andrew faces a pivotal moment as he must demonstrate his ability to finance the extensive repairs; otherwise, the Crown Estate could begin considering his departure from the Royal Lodge.
Should Andrew fail to gather the necessary funds, the Crown Estate may repurpose the Royal Lodge for commercial use or as a residence for other royal family members. The Duke’s future in Windsor Great Park remains uncertain as he faces this critical deadline.
