A Panamanian bodybuilding influencer and fitness pioneer, Johanna Perez, died three days after celebrating her 35th birthday, her family announced on October 25, 2024. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Known professionally as “Johafit” on Instagram, Perez had built a following of nearly 46,000 followers, sharing nutritional guidance and workout routines. She was recognized as one of Panama’s first female bodybuilding competitors and accumulated several tournament victories during her career.
Just days before she passed away, the bodybuilder posted a photo of herself flexing her muscles on a beach during her birthday celebration, with two balloons displaying the number ’35.’ In the caption, she thanked God for granting her another year of life, hoping it would be filled with love, health, passion, wealth, happiness, strength, and peace. She also thanked God for allowing her to pursue her passion daily, surrounded by wonderful people, creating unforgettable experiences, and gradually achieving all her goals.
Her sudden death has deeply affected her followers, with many sharing tributes. One fan mentioned feeling the loss even without knowing her personally, lamenting that her positive content would be missed. Another commented on her inner beauty and wished her peace in the afterlife.
Her passing follows a pattern of unexpected deaths in the bodybuilding community. Recently, another bodybuilding influencer, Illia “Golem” Yefimchyk, died at age 36 from a heart attack, and 19-year-old Brazilian bodybuilder Matheus Pavlak also reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack.
A recent study analyzing mortality data in bodybuilding revealed concerning statistics. Among 19,411 athletes studied between 2005 and 2023, 121 deaths were reported, with cardiovascular diseases being the leading cause. Researchers observed that the rate of sudden cardiac death among athletes was 21 cases per 100,000 annually, a figure significantly higher than that seen in other sports.
A funeral service for Johanna Pérez was held on Monday, October 28. Her family had encouraged attendees to wear colorful clothing to the service as a tribute to her vibrant spirit, reflecting her lively personality and her positive impact on the bodybuilding community.
