Prince William has mentioned his estranged brother Prince Harry in a new documentary about homelessness, marking one of the few times he has publicly acknowledged his brother since their relationship deteriorated.
The Prince of Wales recalls a significant childhood memory in the upcoming ITV documentary “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” where he discusses visiting The Passage, a homeless shelter in London, with his mother Princess Diana and brother Harry.
“My mother took me to the Passage, she took Harry and I both there,” William says in the documentary. “I must have been about 11, I think probably at the time, maybe 10. I’d never been to anything like that before, and I was a bit anxious as to what to expect.”
The documentary, which follows William during the first year of his Homewards initiative, includes previously unseen photographs from these early visits to The Passage with Diana in 1993.
The brothers have reportedly not spoken for more than two years, since the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Their relationship has become increasingly strained following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s departure from royal duties and Harry’s publication of his memoir “Spare,” which included allegations of a physical altercation with William.
Despite the current tensions, William has referenced his brother on other occasions. During a Caribbean tour in early 2022, William responded to a question about Harry’s previous visit to Belize in 2012. Cynthia Ellis-Topsy, ambassador at large for the Garifuna nation, told PEOPLE magazine that when she mentioned Harry’s dancing during his visit, William responded with a laugh, saying, “Harry’s not self-conscious.”
Later that year, in September 2022, during a walkabout at the Sandringham estate following Queen Elizabeth’s death, William acknowledged his brother’s birthday when asked by a well-wisher. When questioned if he had forgotten the occasion, William replied, “No, I’ve not forgotten.”
The new documentary focuses on William’s Homewards project, a five-year initiative aimed at developing solutions to make homelessness “rare, brief and unrepeated.”
The documentary will be broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom and will also be available on Disney+, marking a significant addition to the streaming platform’s royal content offerings.
Harry’s most recent visit to London occurred in 2024 when he traveled to meet with King Charles following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis. During this visit, the brothers did not meet.
Royal insiders note that while the relationship between the brothers is currently “very bad,” it is not considered “irreparable,” suggesting potential for future reconciliation.
