An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot while standing near a window in her apartment in Independence, Louisiana on Friday morning, October 4.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Independence Police Department are jointly investigating the incident. The victim, identified as Le’Airrah Dupard, was found dead shortly after 9 a.m. at her residence on First Street.
Investigators suggest that Dupard was near a window when a bullet penetrated the glass and struck her. “We believe she was not the intended target,” a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said.
Later that evening, around 9:30 p.m., deputies discovered the body of 38-year-old Renaldo Brumfield in the 12000 block of Oak Hill Road in Kentwood, Louisiana. Brumfield had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that he had been involved in an altercation with 41-year-old Gerald Harvey prior to the shooting.
Harvey was arrested and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on a second-degree murder charge. The investigation into Brumfield’s death is ongoing.
As for the shooting of Dupard, no suspects have been identified at this time. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking information that could lead to an arrest.
