Gustavo Macalpin, a seasoned news anchor in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, was abruptly dismissed live on air, after criticizing a recent political appointment.
Macalpin, who had been with Channel 66 for seven years, hosted “Ciudadano 2.0,” a program known for its sharp political commentary. During the broadcast, he questioned the appointment of Carlos Torres—husband of Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda—as Tijuana’s special projects coordinator. This high-profile role raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, particularly given Torres’ close political ties.
Shortly after delivering his remarks on Monday, October 7, 2024, Macalpin received a text message that foreshadowed what was to come. Minutes later, Channel 66 owner and general manager Luis Arnoldo Cabada appeared on set, a rare move highlighting the gravity of the situation. Cabada embraced Macalpin before announcing the termination. “I came to thank you for your last six years of work,” Cabada added, “but this is your last day.”
Macalpin’s firing has sparked speculation about the relationship between Channel 66 and the Governor’s office. The anchor later hinted on TikTok that his termination was likely due to his ongoing political criticism. However, he noted that “it is something that the owner of the TV station had already decided after a long time.” He stressed that he did not believe Torres’ criticism alone was the cause.
Channel 66 News Director Francisco Javier Garcia shared that Macalpin and Cabada had not been getting along recently, leading to the decision to dismiss the anchor. Cabada later called into Garcia’s news show to apologize for how the firing was handled. On social media, Cabada commented that while Macalpin is a great individual, he never quite fit into Channel 66’s team.
Viewers used their social media accounts to criticize Cabada and held Baja California Governor Ávila responsible for Macalpin’s firing. The governor, meanwhile, expressed on social media that she considers Macalpin a friend and extended her well wishes to him as a communicator.
Governor Ávila denied having any role in the decision and expressed surprise at the abrupt dismissal. She reaffirmed her dedication to supporting free speech, stating on Facebook that she upholds everyone’s right to express themselves.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum later called for Macalpin to return to his show, stating in her press conference that his dismissal was inappropriate if it was due to criticism directed at the governor or anyone else.
After the incident, Macalpin traveled to Mexico City in search of new employment but has not found a job offer yet. He failed to secure a job at TV Azteca after discussions with Jorge Garralda, prompting him to explore job opportunities in the United States.
He wrote on X, “Family, I am going to the United States now, and I am still asking you for the same favor. Please do not let me go.”
Macalpin has also been active on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, sharing updates about his career and life.
