10 Dead, 13 Injured in Bar Attack

On Saturday night, November 9, 2024, a group of armed individuals attacked the Los Cantaritos bar in the historic district of Queretaro, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to 13 others. The assailants, numbering at least four, arrived at the establishment in a pickup truck and opened fire on patrons inside. The victims included seven men and three women.

Juan Luis Ferrusca Ortiz, head of public security in the city, confirmed the incident and reported the number of casualties. He added that authorities had detained at least one suspect after the attack.

Officials identified those involved by tracking the vehicle’s license plates, which the attackers used to flee the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned and burned.

Footage from two of the bar’s security cameras, shared on social media, captures a group of four entering the bar and firing indiscriminately at patrons seated at various tables. The video shows people screaming, dropping to the floor, and desperately seeking cover, with blood visible from those who were struck by gunfire.

Queretaro, located approximately 120 miles northwest of Mexico City, is generally considered one of the safer regions in the country. The state has largely been spared the levels of violence seen in neighboring areas. However, this incident has raised concerns about the potential spread of organized crime-related violence into previously unaffected regions.

Governor Mauricio Kuri condemned the attack and assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice. “I reiterate to the people of Queretaro that there will be punishment for those responsible for this brutal act,” Kuri stated. He also mentioned that security measures would be reinforced to prevent further incidents.

The injured victims were transported to local hospitals, where they are receiving medical care. Two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families.

This attack is part of a broader pattern of violence affecting various parts of Mexico. While Queretaro has been relatively insulated from such incidents, other regions have experienced significant violence linked to organized crime and drug cartels. The federal government has been implementing measures to combat these criminal organizations, but challenges persist.

Residents have expressed shock and concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for increased security and vigilance. Community leaders are urging citizens to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities to help prevent future attacks.

The Los Cantaritos bar, a popular local establishment, has been temporarily closed following the attack. Owners and staff are cooperating with authorities as they assess the damage and plan for future operations. Support services are being offered to employees and patrons affected by the incident.

As investigations continue, authorities call on witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the remaining suspects. The public is encouraged to provide tips anonymously to ensure their safety while aiding law enforcement efforts.
