A 24-year-old Amazon delivery driver faces multiple charges after allegedly striking and killing a 79-year-old woman in Canton, Georgia, and continuing his delivery route on November 12, 2023.
The driver, London Rozier Best of Alpharetta, was arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death after his delivery truck allegedly hit Sandra Fitts as she was crossing Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane. Fitts had just visited a family cemetery before the fatal collision.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., prompting deputies to respond to the hit-and-run scene. Evidence at the site suggested an Amazon delivery truck was involved. While en route, a deputy spotted a delivery truck turning onto Bishop Drive and called for assistance to locate it. Officers discovered the vehicle with damage consistent with the accident and identified it as the truck involved in the crash.
Best was subsequently arrested. Authorities emphasized that if he had remained at the scene, he likely would have avoided felony charges. However, upon further investigation, police obtained a search warrant for the van and discovered narcotics inside, leading to additional charges. These included possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of a Schedule 1 narcotic (THC wax), and possession of drug-related objects.
The victim, Sandra Fitts, was a beloved community member, remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cared deeply for her family and enjoyed helping stray cats. Her death has left a profound impact on those who knew her.
An Amazon spokesperson expressed the company’s sadness over the incident and stated they are cooperating fully with the local police investigation. They confirmed that Best had been suspended from performing deliveries pending the outcome of the investigation.
Best remains held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center; it is unclear if he has secured legal representation.
This tragic event is part of a broader conversation about delivery drivers’ safety protocols and responsibilities, particularly with companies like Amazon, which prioritize speed and efficiency. Notably, in September 2024, an Amazon delivery van collided with a Toyota Sienna in Huntington Beach, California, resulting in the deaths of both occupants of the Sienna.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and comprehensive training for delivery personnel to prevent such devastating outcomes.
