During a Newsnight episode aired on November 20, 2024 on CNN, host Abby Phillip stepped in to address perceived disrespectful conduct from pro-Trump guest, Bruce LeVell. This followed an incident where LeVell addressed Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky as “dear” in a heated conversation.
The panel was discussing investigations into claims of sexual misconduct allegedly committed by ex-congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida. LeVell argued that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had found no substantial evidence against Gaetz. Roginsky, however, countered this claim, pointing out that the DOJ had said there was insufficient evidence to indict, not that Gaetz was innocent.
Following LeVell’s remark, Phillip interrupted and said, “Do not address a grown woman in that condescending tone at my table.” LeVell acknowledged Phillip’s admonition and the conversation continued. This incident underscores CNN’s ongoing attempts to sustain respectful dialogue during political debates.
This confrontation wasn’t the first time LeVell has had a heated exchange on CNN. Previously in August, Laura Coates, a CNN anchor, rebuked him for interrupting her during a panel discussion on former President Trump’s comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity. Coates had questioned LeVell’s statements about Harris’ racial identification throughout her political career.
After being nominated as attorney general by Trump, Gaetz withdrew his name due to the ongoing investigation, labeling it as a distraction. The DOJ had earlier informed Gaetz he wouldn’t face charges related to their investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct, including alleged inappropriate behavior with a 17-year-old girl and payments for “intimate encounters” with other women.
Recent reports indicate a sharp drop in CNN’s viewership, plummeting to the lowest levels since 2000. This decline has reportedly led to high-profile anchors including Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett facing the possibility of pay cuts and layoffs.
The network has affirmed its commitment to promoting professional dialogue on its shows. CNN has declared that there is “zero room for racism or bigotry,” and it aims to facilitate meaningful discussions among differing viewpoints without guests being belittled.
