Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been appointed to co-lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. This initiative aims to eliminate waste and fraud within the federal government.
Musk announced his role at the America First Policy Institute Gala held at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on November 14, 2024. He emphasized that his involvement signifies a transformative approach to governance. “As President Trump said, what we need is common sense,” Musk stated. Musk is joined by former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in this endeavor. Together, they are tasked with identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in the federal budget, which currently stands at $6.5 trillion. President-elect Trump expressed confidence in their capabilities, stating that Musk and Ramaswamy will “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” He added that their efforts will “liberate our Economy, and make the U.S. Government accountable to ‘WE THE PEOPLE.'”
Musk’s appointment to DOGE follows his active support during Trump’s presidential campaign when he contributed approximately $130 million. This support has been viewed as strategically aligning his business interests with favorable government policies.
In addition to his new governmental role, Musk continues advancing his space exploration ambitions. SpaceX is preparing for the sixth test flight of its Starship spacecraft, designed for missions to Mars. The launch is scheduled to take place from SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas.
