Popular Journalist Quits Before CNN “Bloodbath”

Veteran journalist Chris Wallace is set to leave CNN after three years, ending his high-profile stint at the network. The 77-year-old broadcaster confirmed his decision in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast, stating that he plans to explore independent platforms like streaming and podcasting.

Wallace, who joined CNN in 2021 after nearly two decades at Fox News, highlighted that his decision was not due to dissatisfaction with the network. “I have nothing but positive things to say. CNN has been very good to me,” he emphasized. The veteran journalist noted that the media landscape is shifting rapidly, with streaming platforms and podcasts becoming the new frontier for content creators.

The decision to leave CNN comes at a time when the network faces declining ratings and increasing competition from digital platforms. Wallace’s move is seen as part of a broader trend among media veterans exploring new formats.

CNN CEO Mark Thompson acknowledged Wallace’s contributions, stating, “Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business.”

Thompson is preparing to eliminate hundreds of positions across the organization as part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at modernizing the legacy news network.

The network’s viewership has plummeted to historic lows, with CNN recording its worst performance in the key 25-54 age demographic since 2000, averaging just 61,000 viewers in that category on a recent Tuesday.

Wallace’s surprising decision to walk away from CNN and a seven-figure contract, rather than renegotiate it, is a striking moment for cable TV. Other CNN news anchors face being fired or having their salaries cut.

Looking ahead, Wallace is excited about the possibilities but remains uncertain about his next steps.
