Prince Harry’s Nightmare: Trump’s Return to Power

Following Donald Trump’s election victory as the 47th U.S. president on November 5, 2024, concerns over Prince Harry’s immigration status and his past drug use have re-emerged. The Duke of Sussex’s residency in the United States could potentially be challenged as a result.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative group, has raised questions about Prince Harry’s immigration status, citing admissions in his memoir, “Spare.” The organization has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, alleging that the royal was granted preferential treatment during his visa application process. However, a U.S. judge has decided that Harry’s visa application will remain confidential, recognizing his right to privacy regarding his immigration status.

Trump has been outspoken in his criticism of the Duke of Sussex, stating, “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable.” He has also accused the Biden administration of being overly accommodating to Harry since his move to Montecito, California.

The friction between Trump and the Sussexes is not a recent development. Meghan Markle previously labeled Trump as “misogynistic” and “divisive,” while Harry seemed to indirectly criticize Trump in a video, urging people to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.” Trump responded to Meghan’s comments by saying he was “not a fan of hers” and hinting that Harry might need some luck.

Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, on the other hand, showed indifference towards the situation, declaring, “I don’t give a damn if he did drugs.” He suggested that Prince Harry’s visa status is not a concern because “no one cares” about the duke or his “unpopular” wife Meghan. He did, however, affirm the Trump family’s “tremendous respect for the monarchy.”

It has been reported that the Sussexes have prepared alternative plans. Sources indicate that they have property in Portugal, which could serve as a potential residence if issues arise with Harry’s U.S. visa status. The Portuguese location would also provide them with easier access to the United Kingdom and a base in Europe.

Interestingly, Harry’s initial visa was approved during Trump’s administration in 2020. If Harry’s visa falls under categories that could be scrutinized by the Trump administration, such as the O-1 visa for individuals with “extraordinary ability,” his U.S. residency could be at risk. The Heritage Foundation may choose to appeal its case under Trump’s new administration, possibly leading to a review of Harry’s visa application.

Despite these challenges, Harry and Meghan seem to have adapted to life in the U.S., with Meghan launching her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. While the brand is still in its early stages, she plans to offer a range of products including jams, tableware, yoga accessories, and home goods.

The brand recently experienced a hurdle when its trademark application was denied in September. The name of the brand, derived from a popular nickname for Santa Barbara, California, was rejected as it is considered a common regional term.
