A 14-year-old girl died early Sunday morning after falling from a luxury apartment building in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, according to police officials. The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. on November 17, 2024, at 101 Wooster Street near Spring Street. Police were notified of an unconscious girl, said an NYPD spokesperson.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, where they pronounced the teen dead. The girl resided with her family in the seven-story building, occupying a duplex unit on the third and fourth floors. She leaped from the top of the seven-story building, police officials stated.
The building features the Canada Goose clothing store on its ground floor and is known for its high-end residences. According to listings on StreetEasy.com, apartments in the building can sell for more than $7 million.
The NYPD has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
This incident is part of a concerning pattern of fatal falls in New York City. On October 12, 2024, an 81-year-old woman fell from the 28th floor of a high-rise apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Witnesses reported that her body struck the side of the building during the fall, resulting in decapitation. “I pulled up just as she was laying there, she had no head,” a resident of the building told The New York Post.
A week later, on October 20, 2024, a woman fell to her death from a luxury high-rise in Midtown Manhattan. Police responded to a 911 call around 11:30 a.m. and found the woman lying on the ground outside Cannon Point South at 45 Sutton Place. She had injuries indicating a fall from an elevated position and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In another incident, a 24-year-old man fell to his death from a third-story window in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on November 3, 2024. He was reportedly watching the New York City Marathon when he fell at around 12:30 p.m. Officers found him unconscious and unresponsive; he was transported to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was declared dead.
