Six Dead In Wrong-Way Collision

In the early hours of Friday, December 6, 2024, a catastrophic head-on collision on Interstate 55 near Daniel Lake Boulevard in Jackson, Mississippi claimed six lives. At approximately 2:45 a.m., a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with a Hyundai Sonata carrying five occupants, as reported by the Jackson Police Department.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the victims as Jose Ferragut, 23, of Scott County, who was driving the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, and Henri Perez, 30, of Copiah County, the driver of the Hyundai Sonata. The other occupants of the Hyundai Sonata, all from Copiah County, were Angelita Avendano, 34, Ezekiel Perez, 6, Juana Alonzo, 18, and Francisco Lopez, 18. All six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jackson Police Department extended its condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims of this tragic event.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officer Darnika Mayfield emphasized the importance of adhering to the state’s left-lane passing law to prevent wrong-way collisions. She explained that drivers with medical conditions or impairments might mistakenly believe they are traveling correctly while driving in the opposite lane. To address this risk, she stressed the need for drivers to remain in the right lane except when passing, reminding them to return to the right lane immediately after overtaking another vehicle.

Authorities are examining factors such as potential driver impairment, road conditions, and vehicle functionality to determine the cause of the collision. Though relatively rare, wrong-way driving incidents often result in severe outcomes due to the high speeds involved.

The National Transportation Safety Board has previously highlighted the dangers of such collisions, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures like improved signage and road design.

Wrong-way driving crashes account for approximately 3.7% of fatal collisions on divided highways in the United States, leading to an average of 500 deaths annually between 2015 and 2018—a 34% increase from the 375 deaths per year between 2010 and 2014.

In Mississippi, the situation is particularly concerning; the state had the highest traffic accident fatality rate per 100,000 people in 2020. Factors contributing to these alarming statistics include impaired driving, distracted driving, and inadequate road infrastructure. Most recently, on June 22, 2024, a wrong-way collision on Interstate 55 in Gluckstadt, Mississippi, led to one death and three injuries.

Nationally, wrong-way driving remains a significant concern as well. In November 2024, a wrong-way driver in Southlake, Texas collided with multiple vehicles and engaged in a shootout with police.

These events spotlight the urgent need for effective measures to prevent wrong-way driving and enhance road safety nationwide.
