Furious Ex-CIA Chief Rips Trump

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, January 20, 2025, revoking the security clearances of 51 former intelligence officials who signed a controversial 2020 letter regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop. The letter was released publicly on October 19, 2020. The officials claimed in their letter that the release of emails from the laptop bore “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” The executive order accuses the signatories of weaponizing their intelligence credentials to influence the 2020 presidential election.

The letter surfaced three days before the second presidential debate between Trump and Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign. It suggested that the laptop’s contents, published by the New York Post, could be linked to Russian disinformation efforts. While the letter acknowledged the signatories had no direct evidence of Russian involvement, it stated that their collective experience made them “deeply suspicious” that Moscow played a role.

Among the signatories was John Brennan, the former CIA Director, who appeared on MSNBC on Tuesday, January 21 to criticize the executive order. “He misrepresented the facts in that executive order because it said that we had suggested that the Hunter Biden laptop story was Russian disinformation,” Brennan told host Andrea Mitchell. He argued that the letter stated the incident had hallmarks of Russian operations, including strategically releasing accurate information.

The executive order counters Brennan’s claims, stating that the officials “willfully weaponized the gravitas of the Intelligence Community to manipulate the political process.” It also alleges that the letter’s release was coordinated with the Biden campaign, citing testimony from former CIA Director Michael Morrell, who admitted the letter was “triggered” by a call from Biden campaign official Antony Blinken.

During the final 2020 presidential debate, Biden cited the letter to counter Trump’s allegations of corruption. “There are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he’s accusing me of is a Russian plant,” Biden stated. The letter became a central talking point for the Biden campaign, used to cast doubt on the authenticity of the laptop’s contents.

Since then, it has been confirmed that the FBI had obtained and authenticated Hunter Biden’s laptop as early as November 2019. The laptop’s contents, including emails detailing business dealings with a Ukrainian businessman and involvement in a Chinese energy venture, have been verified by whistleblowers and entered into evidence during Hunter Biden’s gun trial in 2023.

The executive order also highlights that the letter was sent to the CIA Prepublication Classification Review Board for clearance, a standard procedure for sensitive documents. Critics of the signatories, including GOP lawmakers, argue that their actions undermined public trust in the Intelligence Community and influenced the election outcome. Some signatories, such as former DNI James Clapper and former CIA Director Michael Hayden, no longer held active security clearances at the time of the letter’s publication.

Attorney Mark Zaid, representing several signatories, defended their actions, stating the letter was cleared through proper channels and contained no classified information. “It would be contrary to decades of national security norms to suspend the security clearances of individuals who did nothing other than, as private citizens, exercise their protected First Amendment rights,” Zaid said.

The executive order also targets Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, for his memoir, which allegedly contained sensitive information. Trump accused Bolton of undermining national security and using classified material inappropriately. The Justice Department under Joe Biden ended an investigation into the memoir after its pre-publication review.

Brennan dismissed the revocation of security clearances as politically motivated. “This was just his effort to get back at those individuals who have criticized him openly,” Brennan said, referring to Trump.

Hunter Biden’s laptop, which was dropped off at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, has been the center of political and legal scrutiny. The shop owner turned the device over to the FBI, but questions surrounding its authenticity persisted until recent years. Despite tampering claims by Hunter Biden’s legal team, federal prosecutors confirmed its authenticity, calling earlier skepticism a “conspiracy theory.”

Republican lawmakers have used the letter to argue that the Intelligence Community colluded with the Biden campaign to suppress damaging information. The House Judiciary Committee has called several signatories to testify behind closed doors, further fueling partisan debate.

The executive order calls for the Director of National Intelligence to submit a report within 90 days detailing additional inappropriate activities related to the letter. Whether the revocation of clearances will have lasting implications for the former officials remains to be seen.
