Cruise Ship Employee Jumps to Death After Attack

A Royal Caribbean crew member died after stabbing a female colleague and jumping overboard from the world’s largest cruise ship Thursday evening near the Bahamas, according to police.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on July 24, 2025, aboard the Icon of the Seas while the ship was sailing off the coast of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. A 35-year-old South African man allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old South African woman multiple times in her upper body before fleeing the scene and jumping into the ocean.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the man was later found unresponsive in the water and pronounced dead by onboard medical staff despite rescue efforts. The female victim received immediate medical treatment and remains in stable condition after suffering multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

Passengers aboard the vessel reported hearing “oscar oscar oscar” over the intercom, which is Royal Caribbean’s code for a man overboard situation. Video footage shared by passengers showed crew members rushing to respond to the emergency as the massive ship slowed down and turned around to conduct search and rescue operations.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson described the incident as stemming from a personal dispute between the two crew members. The company stated that “one of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition.”

The cruise line’s onboard security team responded immediately to the incident, and rescue crews deployed a high-speed boat to search for the man who had jumped overboard. Witnesses reported seeing crew members throw life rings into the water to mark the location where the man entered the ocean.

Due to the Icon of the Seas being nearly 1,200 feet long and weighing approximately 250,800 tons, it took considerable time for the vessel to slow down and maneuver back to the rescue location. The ship was traveling at a relatively low speed after spending the day at sea and was en route to Royal Caribbean’s private island, CocoCay, for a scheduled stop the following day.

Royal Caribbean officials indicated the incident involved two crew members in a personal dispute, though they have not released the identities of those involved or provided details about the motive behind the attack. The cruise line expressed condolences to the deceased crew member’s family and noted they would not share additional details to respect the family’s privacy.

The Icon of the Seas continued its scheduled seven-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary following the incident. The ship had departed PortMiami on July 19 and made stops in St. Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas before returning to Florida. The vessel arrived at CocoCay as planned on July 25 and returned to PortMiami on July 26 to complete its voyage.

Many passengers remained unaware of the incident until much later, as it was not announced publicly throughout the ship. Some passengers shared videos on social media showing the rescue operation and crew members being pulled from the water onto rescue boats.

The Icon of the Seas holds the distinction of being the world’s largest cruise ship, with a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members across its 19 floors. The vessel cost approximately $2 billion to construct and features seven pools, six waterslides, nine whirlpools, and what Royal Caribbean markets as the world’s largest waterpark at sea.

Police have scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death for the male crew member. The investigation into the stabbing and subsequent events remains ongoing, with authorities working to establish the circumstances that led to the violent confrontation.

The incident represents a rare occurrence of violence aboard cruise ships, according to travel industry experts. Royal Caribbean has not indicated whether any changes to security protocols or crew procedures will be implemented following the incident.

Following the completion of its Eastern Caribbean voyage, the Icon of the Seas departed on its next scheduled seven-day Western Caribbean cruise as planned. The cruise line confirmed that no passengers were harmed or placed at risk during the incident involving the two crew members.
