Prince William is allegedly preparing to make sweeping changes to the British royal family once he ascends to the throne, with his estranged brother Prince Harry and sister-in-law Meghan Markle facing the potential loss of their royal titles as part of a broader modernization plan.
Reports published in November 2025 suggest that William plans to strip Harry and Meghan of their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, viewing the move as a necessary step in his long-term plan for a streamlined monarchy. The drastic action would follow a precedent recently set by King Charles III himself.
On October 30, 2025, King Charles III took the extraordinary step of stripping his brother Prince Andrew of his remaining titles and evicting him from his Royal Lodge residence, following weeks of pressure over Andrew’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The official Letters Patent date for the title removal was November 3, 2025. Buckingham Palace announced that Andrew would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and would no longer hold the title of prince.
Royal biographer Andrew Lownie described King Charles’s removal of Andrew’s titles as “a very useful exercise in showing what’s possible regarding titles” and a “warning shot across Harry’s bow.”
Sources close to Prince William told outlets, including The Daily Beast, that William intends to strip Harry and Meghan of their His/Her Royal Highness (HRH) titles once he becomes king. One friend described Harry and Meghan’s behavior as “absolutely vile” and stated flatly: “The HRHs will go”.
The tensions between the brothers have reportedly reached a breaking point. Royal expert Andrew Lownie stated it is “unlikely William will ever willingly be in the same room again as Harry, except perhaps at Charles’ deathbed and possibly funeral—although Lownie adds William may ban Harry from the funeral.”
The issue intensified in April 2025 when Meghan published compliments slips and a letter using her HRH title, despite having promised Queen Elizabeth II in 2020 that she and Harry would stop using the honorific when they stepped down as senior working royals.
A friend of William stated, “Charles has completely lost control. It’s apparent that Harry and Meghan have every intention of making his final years a misery, just as he feared they would. Meghan using her HRH exposes how weak and enfeebled he is. She knows he won’t do anything. There is no way King William will stand for this. The titles will simply be removed when he is king.”
While the HRH style can be removed through Letters Patent—essentially a royal executive order—stripping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles would be far more complex, requiring legislative action through an Act of Parliament.
Constitutional expert Norman Baker explained that “as the bestowing of an HRH is in the gift of the monarch, the monarch could remove the HRH title. It would basically be the equivalent to an executive order in the U.S.”
According to reports, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet could also lose their royal titles through formal letters patent once William takes the throne. The children were granted their prince and princess titles in 2023 following King Charles’s accession.
Additionally, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, daughters of the now titleless Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, could face title changes as William reportedly plans to limit titles to working royals only.
Interestingly, reports suggest William may even “park” the titles of his own children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—until they’re old enough to decide if they want to be working royals.
TalkTV host Mark Dolan argued that William’s patience has worn thin, particularly following Harry’s surprise visit to Canada in November 2025, which coincided with William’s Earthshot commitments in Brazil. Dolan claimed William’s team was “left enraged” by what they viewed as Harry attempting to stage a parallel royal tour.
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich noted that while King Charles “is tolerant and lenient” and has “always hoped for some sort of reconciliation,” Prince William “has felt personally betrayed by the one person who shared his childhood experiences”.
With King Charles battling cancer at age 77, the question of when William will ascend to the throne—and implement these reported changes—remains uncertain. However, royal watchers believe the younger prince’s determination to reshape the monarchy is unwavering, making title removal one of the most closely watched potential developments in the royal family’s future.
