Melania Stuns Nation With Brazen New Move

President Trump’s long chase for a Nobel Peace Prize has turned up an unlikely rival inside his own home.

Kalshi opened its 2027 Nobel Peace Prize market on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, and First Lady Melania Trump, 56, debuted in second place with a 4 percent chance, behind only Doctors Without Borders at 4.6 percent. President Donald Trump, 80, opened at 1.1 percent.

Also ahead of the president were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Pope Leo XIV, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Criminal Court, which Trump sanctioned in October. He has been generous about his wife’s diplomacy, telling reporters she is “doing better than the professionals right now.”

The Market Changed Its Mind

The 4 percent did not hold. Within a few days her Kalshi price had fallen to 1.2 percent, level with her husband, on a board that also carries Yulia Navalnaya, Pope Leo XIV, Elon Musk and the International Criminal Court.

Polymarket ran the other way. There the president stood at 9 percent, Zelensky at 6 percent and the first lady at 5 percent, the eighth favorite on that platform.

Mines First, Then the Aid Trucks

The betting interest followed the ceasefire. On Friday, Oct. 23, the White House announced that Melania Trump had brokered a localized truce in Oleshky, a Kherson region city on the Dnipro’s southern bank that Russian forces captured in 2022. Its population has dropped from about 24,000 before the invasion to around 2,000.

The White House said she opened talks after hearing about Oleshky’s plight at an event she hosted on the sidelines of September’s U.N. General Assembly, and her office called her the agreement’s sole intermediary. Her statement set the truce to start Oct. 29, halting fighting so aid could reach the city and civilians could leave through a designated safe passageway. The Russian and Ukrainian militaries said they would observe it from 0100 GMT Tuesday, Oct. 27 — two days before the date she gave. Both sides were honoring it on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said, and the pause is set to run until Nov. 1.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman and its chief negotiator in the talks, thanked the first lady and said the route to Oleshky has to be cleared of mines before any aid moves or anyone is evacuated. He said the work would proceed in stages, would be very difficult, and could serve as a model for future humanitarian missions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed her efforts.

The White House account that she negotiated the deal single-handedly has since come under scrutiny, with critics saying she took credit owed to Pope Leo XIV. Her office credits her with reuniting more than 30 children with families the war had split apart. In October 2025, she announced that eight of them had been returned to relatives after back-channel talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Bar Eleanor Roosevelt Set

Timothy D. Sisk, a University of Denver political scientist who was once a visiting scholar and Fulbright fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told Newsweek that one local truce will not win her the 2027 prize in a war where ceasefires keep collapsing. It would take something closer to Eleanor Roosevelt’s work shaping the 1948 U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he said. Roosevelt, who was nominated for the prize several times, never won it.

Frank Rusciano, who teaches American and comparative politics at Rider University, rated her chances as remote and said the Oleshky effort falls short of what the prize demands. The president’s limited support for Ukraine, he added, damages her case.

Trump lost the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who later gave him her medal. This year’s award went to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, the former U.N. human rights chief who led a commission that concluded in 2025 that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. What Trump has instead is the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize, handed to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the Kennedy Center during the 2026 World Cup draw.

At a rally on Sunday, Oct. 25, two days before the Kalshi market opened, he complained that he had promised the first lady he would win the 2026 prize, then turned a profane tirade on Norway.

The Kremlin says trilateral Ukraine-Russia-U.S. peace talks will resume in Abu Dhabi. Asked whether his wife could take part, Trump replied: “No, but it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard.”
