Police, via a Facebook post on November 21, 2023, announced the death of four teenagers during a camping excursion in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, U.K.
The deceased, Wilf Fitchett (also reported as Wilf Henderson), Jevon Hirst, Harvey Owen, and Hugo Morris, aged 16 to 18, were from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Their last known communication was on the morning of November 19, 2023, and they were reported missing by their parents on the 20th. They were found inside an upside-down vehicle that had strayed off the road and landed in a water-filled ditch.
North Wales Police Superintendent Owain Llewellyn indicated that the incident likely occurred by accident. Area locals reported that the roads are narrow and steep, and the weather was wet and windy.
The discovery of the teenagers followed a tip received on Tuesday morning. A local citizen reported a Ford Fiesta in an overturned position, partially submerged in water in the vicinity of Porthmadog, Wales. This region, celebrated for its natural beauty, is popular among hikers and campers, and is home to Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in the U.K. outside the Scottish Highlands.
The students, all from Shrewsbury College, set off on Saturday, November 18, and were on a camping journey in the Eryri region, also known as Snowdonia. The college acknowledged the work of emergency personnel and local mountain rescue teams in a statement and confirmed that support is being provided to those affected by the tragedy.
The accident site remained sealed off for a detailed investigation by the police.
