9/11 Hero Dies at 91

Respected retired firefighter, Bob Beckwith, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the age of 91. His death was confirmed by both the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Beckwith was a symbol of resilience and bravery, especially known for his iconic moment alongside President George W. Bush at Ground Zero following the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

A native of New York City, Beckwith started his career with the FDNY in 1965. He served the city he cherished with dedication, primarily with Ladder 164 in Queens, until he retired in 1994. His service to the city spanned over three decades, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his community.

Despite having retired, Beckwith returned to duty at the age of 69 to aid in the search and rescue operations at Ground Zero. This act of courage and tenacity was a testament to the resilient spirit of New Yorkers and the nation at large. His presence alongside President Bush in the ruins of the World Trade Center remains an enduring image of the nation’s resolve in the face of adversity.

Beckwith’s actions on September 14, 2001, as President Bush delivered a historic speech at Ground Zero, have been deeply ingrained in the nation’s memory. The image of Beckwith standing with the President symbolized not only the valor of the FDNY in their darkest hour but also the nation’s determination to recover and rebuild.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and New York Representative Anthony D’Esposito both expressed gratitude and remembrance for Beckwith. They highlighted his legacy as a symbol of hope and courage amidst tragedy. The Uniformed Firefighters Association of the FDNY echoed these sentiments, recognizing Beckwith for his substantial sacrifices during the events of 9/11. The association lauded Beckwith in a statement as a “towering figure among the 9/11 heroes.”

Beckwith continued to impact lives even after his retirement. He became an advocate for healthcare for 9/11 first responders, helping others navigate their experiences from that day. In an interview last year, Beckwith said that he had malignant skin cancer, but his cause of death is not yet known. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, six children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Services in memory of Beckwith will take place on Long Island, where family, friends, and a nation that is grateful for his service will bid him farewell. His life, from his service in the firehouses of New York to his place in national memory, is a testament to his dedication to his city and to the values of courage and community that continue in his absence.
