Famous TV News Anchor Dies at 78

Veteran Fox business news anchor, Lou Dobbs, who was also known for his strong support of Donald Trump, passed away on July 18, 2024. His demise, at the age of 78, was announced via an official statement on his social media channels, commemorating him as a “fighter till the very end.”

Dobbs established an eminent career in broadcasting journalism, starting with CNN in 1980. He was part of the network from its inception, anchoring the business news program “Moneyline.” His association with CNN spanned over two decades. Dobbs then left in 2009 to aid Rupert Murdoch in the launch of the Fox Business Network.

“Lou was one of the CNN originals, who helped launch and shape the network. We are saddened to hear about his passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Debi, children, and his family,” a CNN spokesperson conveyed.

With the rise of Donald Trump in Republican politics, Dobbs emerged as one of his staunchest supporters. His show became a platform for anti-immigrant views and criticism of the so-called “deep state.” His endorsement of Trump’s unfounded allegations regarding the 2020 election resulted in significant legal troubles for Fox News. Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox, leading to a $787 million settlement in the previous year. Smartmatic’s lawsuit, which includes Dobbs, remains unresolved.

The ensuing legal issues led Fox Business to cancel his show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” in February 2021.

Former President Donald Trump lauded Dobbs, referring to him as a friend and “truly incredible journalist, reporter, and talent.” Trump further stated, “He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others. Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed!”

Fox News, which Dobbs joined in 2011, also offered their condolences. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lou Dobbs. An incredible business mind with a gift for broadcasting, Lou helped pioneer cable news into a successful and influential industry,” a Fox News Media spokesperson stated. “We are immensely grateful for his many contributions and send our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

However, Dobbs’ career was marked by controversies. His exit from CNN in 2009 was partly attributed to his propagation of the “birther” conspiracy theory concerning President Barack Obama’s birthplace.

Notwithstanding the controversies, Dobbs played a pivotal role in shaping the cable news industry. He significantly influenced CNN’s business news coverage and later brought his unique style to Fox Business. His support for Trump and the promotion of populist ideas garnered him a dedicated audience and considerable criticism.

Lou Dobbs is survived by his wife, Debi Lee Segura, and their children. The cause of his death has not been made public. Tributes have poured in on social media from fans and colleagues, honoring him as a trailblazer in cable news and a fervent commentator.
