Former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, 74, opened up about finding moments of happiness while caring for his wife Mavis amid her battle with dementia, sharing a touching story about an unexpected shopping trip that brought laughter to their day.
In a candid interview with People magazine, Leno revealed how he tries to maintain positivity in their daily life. “You try to find the humor in this situation,” he shared, describing a recent shopping excursion to lift his wife’s spirits.
The television personality recounted taking Mavis to Nordstrom when he noticed she was feeling down. During their shopping trip, she found two pairs of sneakers she liked. What started as a simple purchase turned into an amusing moment when Leno discovered one pair was significantly more expensive than the other. “I go, no, I only had two pairs of sneakers. I thought these were $24. [The cashier] goes, Yeah, these are $24. But the other ones were [designer sneakers],” Leno explained.
The second pair, which appeared to be a bedazzled version of similar sneakers, cost $847. Despite the price difference, Leno found humor in the situation. “It’s fine, I’m glad I can afford this and it made my wife happy. It just made me laugh,” he shared.
Last year in April, Leno was granted conservatorship of Mavis after court documents revealed she “sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth.” The couple, who married in 1980, has faced this health challenge together while maintaining their strong bond.
Despite the challenges, the Lenos continue to make public appearances together. During the premiere of “Unfrosted” in Los Angeles, Mavis herself spoke about her condition, positively stating, “I feel great, yeah!”
At the Feminist Majority Foundation’s 16th Annual Global Women’s Rights Awards & Gala, Leno became emotional while discussing their relationship on Fox News.
During the ceremony, Leno took to the stage and described marrying Mavis as “the smartest thing I’ve ever done.”
The conservatorship arrangement was established to protect both Leno and his wife, as they do not have any children. The court found this to be the “least restrictive alternative” to ensure Mavis’s well-being, particularly regarding the management of their shared property and assets in a trust.
While managing his wife’s health challenges, Leno has also faced his own physical setbacks. In November 2024, he experienced a nasty fall down a 60-foot hill that left him with visible injuries. The accident resulted in a large bruise on the left side of his face, a black eye, and a broken wrist.
Earlier that year, in January 2023, Leno was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. During this incident, he was “clotheslined” and sustained multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone and two broken ribs.
These accidents came after another devastating incident where Leno suffered severe burns. While working on a vintage car in his garage, a steam engine exploded in his face. The explosion occurred when he was working underneath a 1907 White Steam Car, trying to unclog a fuel line. The accident left him with second-degree burns on his face, chest, and hands. He spent nine days at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, California, receiving treatment for his injuries.
Despite these physical setbacks, Leno has maintained his characteristic resilience and sense of humor. He continues to make public appearances and pursue his passion for vintage cars, while also dedicating himself to caring for Mavis. Recently, he was seen looking fully recovered from his fall, with no visible bruising, as he continues to balance his professional commitments with his role as Mavis’s primary caregiver.
