Six young Angolan nationals died early Sunday morning after their BMW crashed and burst into flames near the US Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, in a devastating incident that left the vehicle completely destroyed by fire.
The deadly crash occurred on Avenida das Forcas Armadas in the Sete-Rios area around 3:31 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, according to local authorities. The 19 to 20-year-old driver of the BMW 520 reportedly became distracted at the wheel before the car hit a curb, lost control and struck a pillar or barrier before erupting in flames with all six occupants trapped inside.
All victims, three men and three women aged between 18 and 20, burned to death inside the vehicle. The identities and nationalities of those killed have not yet been released as authorities continue their investigation.
A US Embassy officer on duty witnessed the crash unfold and immediately contacted emergency services. However, by the time firefighters and other first responders arrived at the scene, the flames had already consumed the vehicle.
“The vehicle was completely burned, and it is unclear if seatbelts were used, but given the number of occupants, at least one may not have been wearing one,” Police Commissioner Dinarte Diniz said at the scene, noting the car was a five-seater vehicle.
The BMW was severely overcrowded at the time of the crash, carrying six people in a car designed for five passengers. Four people were seated in the back, while two occupied the front seats. This overcrowding likely contributed to the severity of the accident and reduced the chances of survival for those trapped inside.
“We’re not sure for what reason they lost control,” authorities said, examining all possible factors including the reported driver distraction. The intense fire had already ravaged the vehicle by the time help arrived, and nothing could be done to save the victims once authorities reached the crash site. All belongings inside were destroyed by the flames, complicating initial identification efforts.
The bodies were transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine for proper identification and examination. Authorities believe the victims were a group of friends, though official confirmation has not been released.
Vehicle fires represent one of the most dangerous outcomes of traffic accidents. When a car catches fire after a collision, occupants have only seconds to escape before flames and toxic smoke make survival nearly impossible. Modern vehicles contain numerous flammable materials, from fuel and oil to synthetic interior components, all of which can ignite rapidly following impact damage.
The location of the crash, directly adjacent to the US Embassy on one of Lisbon’s major thoroughfares, meant emergency services could respond quickly. However, the speed at which the fire consumed the vehicle left no opportunity for rescue operations. Photos from the scene showed the burnt-out and charred remains of the BMW, with its structure barely recognizable.
Avenida das Forcas Armadas, which translates to Armed Forces Avenue in English, was closed for several hours following the incident as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the circumstances of the crash. The road was reopened by 11 a.m. on Sunday morning after cleanup and initial investigation work was completed.
Portugal has seen significant road safety challenges throughout 2025. The crash adds to a growing toll of traffic fatalities in the country, where road accidents remain a persistent public safety concern. Major urban areas like Lisbon present particular risks during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility and driver alertness can be compromised.
As Portuguese authorities continue their investigation, the community awaits official identification of the victims and a full accounting of what led to this devastating early morning crash.
