CNN Backs Down After Trump’s Private Meeting

CNN chief executive Mark Thompson reportedly instructed reporters to scale back coverage of President Donald Trump’s controversial East Wing demolition following a private White House meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, according to media outlet Status. The directive came during an editorial call on Thursday, October 23, 2025, leaving staffers “taken aback” by the unusual intervention from the network’s top executive.

Thompson met with Trump at the White House on Wednesday to discuss CNN’s new direct-to-consumer streaming product and potential appearances by Trump administration officials on the network. During the daily editorial meeting the following morning, he suggested that CNN should ease up on its reporting of the East Wing’s demolition, telling staff that viewers were not particularly interested in the story, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The timing of Thompson’s comments raised suspicions among CNN journalists, who found the suggestion bizarre given that the chief executive typically avoids getting directly involved in editorial decisions despite holding the title of editor-in-chief. Staff members began questioning what coverage might be discouraged next, creating unease within the newsroom about future editorial independence.

The East Wing was demolished on Monday, October 20, 2025, to make way for Trump’s $300 million vanity project—a 90,000-square-foot ballroom that will be more than twice the size of the rest of the White House. The teardown of the 1902 structure prompted widespread criticism from prominent figures, including Chelsea Clinton, who said Trump was taking a wrecking ball to American heritage, and Ronald Reagan’s daughter, Patti Davis, who called it heartbreaking and complete destruction.

A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll released Thursday found that 56% of Americans oppose the White House ballroom project that required the demolition of the East Wing, while 28% support it. The poll was conducted between October 24 and October 28 among 2,725 U.S. adults.

CNN responded forcefully to the Status report, with a spokesperson stating there was “zero truth to the conjecture in this column that was not fact checked before publication.” The network confirmed Thompson was at the White House last week, but characterized the Status story as reckless and irresponsible conjecture. The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Thompson joined CNN in 2023 after previously serving as chief executive of The New York Times Company and director-general of the BBC. His leadership has focused on positioning CNN as a news service rather than an opinion and debate service masquerading as news. He recently told Mediaite that he wants CNN to feature a broad range of political voices on air and remain fair-minded across the political spectrum.

The reported incident comes as CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, announced it is up for sale and has received multiple expressions of interest. Paramount Skydance, owned by David Ellison—an ally of Trump—made an offer that was rejected last week. Ellison is viewed as the only potential buyer who would likely receive approval from the Trump administration’s broadcast regulators, with one adviser noting that the connection serves as “the Trump card.”

Trump has maintained a contentious relationship with CNN throughout his political career, regularly including the network in his attacks on what he calls fake news. Earlier in October, he called CNN Senior White House Correspondent Kristen Holmes one of the worst reporters before refusing to answer her question, adding that the network was dying like a dog.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that some CNN employees view Thompson’s reported request as part of a broader pattern. In January 2025, Thompson held virtual editorial meetings directing more than 100 journalists, including Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper, to avoid pre-judging Trump during inauguration coverage and to refrain from expressing personal outrage. He instructed staff not to relitigate the past and to focus on Trump’s second-term policies rather than his previous legal challenges.

Thompson’s approach represents a significant departure from CNN’s editorial strategy under former chief Jeff Zucker, who led the network to frequently challenge Trump’s administration from 2017 to 2021. The shift aligns with Warner Bros. Discovery’s directive to adopt a more neutral tone in covering the Trump administration.

If Warner Bros. Discovery is sold, Thompson is reportedly aware that his tenure as CNN president may be limited. A confidant told Status that when the sale happens, Thompson will be out. Meanwhile, CNN’s streaming product launch next week will serve as a test of Thompson’s big tent approach to programming, which aims to avoid the disastrous fate of CNN+, the previous streaming platform that was shut down following the Warner Media and Discovery merger.
