Former University of Memphis football player La’Andre Thomas, 27, was shot and killed by police in Sandy Springs, Georgia, on Dec. 4 following a confrontation during which authorities say he pulled a handgun from his waistband. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent inquiry into the shooting.
The incident began when Sandy Springs Police Department officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Dunwoody Place. A woman reported that she had been assaulted by a man while walking her dog in the area. Officers obtained a description of the suspect and reviewed security camera footage from the vicinity to aid in their search.
Police located Thomas at a MARTA bus stop near the 8000 block of Dunwoody Place. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Thomas approached the officers and began speaking with them. “During the conversation, Thomas pulled a handgun from his waistband,” the GBI said in a statement. “One officer then shot Thomas, injuring him.”
Thomas was struck by gunfire and immediately transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at the hospital later that same day. No officers were injured during the confrontation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Thomas’ body was sent to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
The investigation into the shooting will be handled independently by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. “Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review,” the GBI stated. Thomas, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, was a standout defensive back for the Memphis Tigers from 2017 to 2019. He appeared in 30 games during his college career, recording 80 total tackles, two interceptions, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. His most productive season came in 2019 when he started all 14 games and tallied 63 tackles as a key contributor to the Tigers’ defensive secondary.
Before his time at the University of Memphis, Thomas attended Wingfield High School in Mississippi, where he established himself as a talented athlete. His college career was hampered by a 2018 injury that limited him to just four games that season, but he bounced back to become a full-time starter in 2019. The defensive back position requires exceptional speed, agility and awareness, and Thomas demonstrated those qualities throughout his three seasons with the Tigers.
