Former University of Memphis football player La’Andre Thomas, 27, was shot and killed by police in Sandy Springs, Georgia, on Dec. 4 following a confrontation during which authorities say he pulled a handgun from his waistband. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent inquiry into the shooting.
The incident began when Sandy Springs Police Department officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Dunwoody Place. A woman reported that she had been assaulted by a man while walking her dog in the area. Officers obtained a description of the suspect and reviewed security camera footage from the vicinity to aid in their search.
Police located Thomas at a MARTA bus stop near the 8000 block of Dunwoody Place. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Thomas approached the officers and began speaking with them. “During the conversation, Thomas pulled a handgun from his waistband,” the GBI said in a statement. “One officer then shot Thomas, injuring him.”
Thomas was struck by gunfire and immediately transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at the hospital later that same day. No officers were injured during the confrontation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Thomas’ body was sent to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
The investigation into the shooting will be handled independently by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. “Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review,” the GBI stated. These procedures are designed to ensure an impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force by law enforcement.
Thomas, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, was a standout defensive back for the Memphis Tigers from 2017 to 2019. He appeared in 30 games during his college career, recording 80 total tackles, two interceptions, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. His most productive season came in 2019 when he started all 14 games and tallied 63 tackles as a key contributor to the Tigers’ defensive secondary.
Before his time at the University of Memphis, Thomas attended Wingfield High School in Mississippi, where he established himself as a talented athlete. His college career was hampered by a 2018 injury that limited him to just four games that season, but he bounced back to become a full-time starter in 2019. The defensive back position requires exceptional speed, agility and awareness, and Thomas demonstrated those qualities throughout his three seasons with the Tigers.
Following Thomas’ death, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support his family and young daughter, Laila. The fundraising page describes the circumstances surrounding his death as unclear and indicates that the family is hiring lawyers to pursue justice and accountability. The campaign aims to cover funeral and memorial expenses while also providing long-term support for Thomas’ daughter, including counseling and therapeutic services to help her cope with the loss of her father.
The fundraiser acknowledges the family’s devastation and confusion over the incident. They are seeking transparency through the release of body camera footage, investigation findings and other details that might shed light on what occurred during the fatal encounter. The family has emphasized that they want to ensure Thomas’ daughter’s rights are protected as they navigate the legal and administrative processes ahead.
Officer-involved shootings typically undergo multiple layers of scrutiny, particularly when they result in fatalities. Independent investigations by state bureaus help ensure that local police departments are not investigating their own officers, providing an additional level of oversight. District attorney offices then review the findings to determine whether criminal charges are warranted or if the use of force was justified under the circumstances.
The loss of Thomas has resonated within the Memphis football community, where former teammates and coaches remember him as a dedicated player who contributed to the program during his three seasons. His journey from high school standout to college athlete represents the path many young players take in pursuit of their athletic dreams, making his death particularly poignant for those who followed his career.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on determining the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting on that December morning in Sandy Springs. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s findings will be crucial in understanding what happened during those final moments and whether proper procedures were followed by the responding officers. For Thomas’ family and daughter, the wait for answers continues as they grieve the loss of a father, son and brother whose life ended at just 27 years old.
