Teen Killed by Crocodile in Front of Friends

A 14-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile while washing clothes in a river in South Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, as his friends and younger sibling looked on in horror.

Muhammad Rafli Hamzah was doing laundry on Monday, January 5, 2026, when the crocodile attacked and dragged him underwater. The boy struggled to break free from the reptile’s grasp, but was pulled from the riverbank and disappeared beneath the surface.

A search was launched by relatives and rescue teams that afternoon. The Kendari Search and Rescue Office dispatched a team to the incident site at approximately 3:30 pm WITA. Search coordinator Amiruddin explained that the team conducted a search along the river using several boats, including those owned by local fishermen.

After hours of searching, Muhammad’s lifeless body was found floating in the river approximately 200 metres from the attack site. The body was retrieved by a combined SAR and Fire Department team.

Ipda Alimudin Latif, Kolono Police Chief, confirmed the body had sustained multiple bite wounds. “Yes, the victim was found deceased. There were multiple bite wounds,” he said. “We urge the community to heighten their awareness to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.”

Estuarine crocodiles thrive in the region’s tropical climate. Overfishing has significantly reduced the crocodiles’ natural food supplies, forcing the reptiles to search for alternative prey sources. When their traditional diet becomes scarce, crocodiles are more likely to venture into areas where humans are present.

Habitat loss from coastal development has also played a critical role. As Indonesia’s coastal areas are converted into farms and urban settlements, crocodiles lose their traditional nesting sites and hunting grounds. Widespread tin mining operations have caused villagers to encroach on the crocodiles’ natural habitats, creating a dangerous overlap between human activity and wildlife territories.

In many rural areas across Indonesia, locals continue to use rivers for bathing and fishing due to limited infrastructure and access to other water sources. These traditional practices, combined with the environmental pressures forcing crocodiles closer to villages, have created conditions that have led to rising numbers of crocodile attacks in recent years.

The South Konawe tragedy was not an isolated incident. In December 2025, another fatal crocodile attack claimed the life of a child in Indonesia’s North Maluku region. Affan, a 10-year-old boy, was killed by a crocodile while swimming in the Inggoi River with friends.

Hendra Gunawan, South Halmahera Police Chief, noted that the area where the December attack occurred was a known crocodile habitat. “Crocodiles still often appear there,” he said. “The locals say they’re swamp crocodiles.”

The twin tragedies in South Konawe and North Maluku underscore the urgent need for comprehensive approaches to managing human-crocodile coexistence in Indonesia. Such strategies must address the root causes of increased encounters, including environmental degradation, habitat encroachment, and resource depletion.

Local authorities in affected regions have called for increased vigilance among residents, particularly parents supervising children near waterways. The warning from Kolono Police following Muhammad Rafli Hamzah’s death reflects the broader concern among officials about preventing future tragedies. However, warnings alone may prove insufficient without addressing the underlying factors that bring humans and crocodiles into such dangerous proximity.
