A British holidaymaker found dead in his Tenerife hotel room nearly seven weeks ago is now at the center of a murder investigation after South Yorkshire Police arrested a woman on suspicion of killing him.
Russell Watts, 63, from Rotherham, was discovered dead in his room at the Hotel Catalonia Punta Del Rey in the Candelaria area of the Spanish holiday island on Saturday, January 10. On Wednesday, police arrested a 56-year-old woman, also from the Rotherham area, on suspicion of murder. She remains in police custody.
The arrest marks a dramatic turn in what investigators describe as a complex case requiring extensive cross-border inquiries between British and Spanish authorities.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood, the senior investigating officer, confirmed the investigation remains in its early stages. “Even the smallest piece of information could prove crucial, and I would implore anyone who may know something to get in contact with us immediately,” Wood said.
South Yorkshire Police issued an urgent appeal for witnesses who stayed at the Hotel Catalonia Punta Del Rey around the time of Watts’s death. Thrybergh Top Club, a working men’s club where Watts was a regular, posted a tribute shortly after his death. The club called him “a character” who “brought energy to the club whenever he came in” and said he was “loved by all and will be greatly missed.”
