Ken Jennings, host of “Jeopardy!,” surprised fans with candid comments about Taylor Swift and RuPaul’s Drag Race during an Instagram Q&A session, ahead of the premiere of a new Jeopardy! YouTube spinoff.
The YouTube spinoff, which premieres March 31, features YouTube stars Rebecca Black, Brennan Mulligan and Monet X Change competing in the premiere episode. Jennings fielded questions from fans in the lead-up to the show’s debut, delivering responses that ranged from playful to revealing.
When asked which competition he considers more difficult—Jeopardy! or Drag Race—Jennings offered an unexpectedly thoughtful answer. “Well, on Jeopardy!, you can dress more comfortably,” he said. “But, of course, the hardest thing would be to be in your drag persona and to go on YouTube Jeopardy!.”
The game show host also revealed his pop culture aspirations when asked if he could tour with any pop star, who would it be. Jennings said he wants to be friends with Taylor Swift and that he is manifesting that friendship.
Jennings’ interest in Swift may not be entirely surprising given his past attempts to attend her concerts. In 2023, Jennings shared he failed to get Eras Tour tickets, joining millions of fans who struggled to secure seats for the record-breaking tour. Swift herself has long been connected to the drag community, having featured drag queens in her 2019 “You Need To Calm Down” music video.
The host’s comments about Swift also touched on his hopes that the pop star might appear in the Jeopardy! studio audience if her close friend Emma Stone ever competes on the show. Stone and Swift have been friends since 2008, when they met at the Young Hollywood Awards. Stone said she’s known Swift since they were 17 and 18.
Stone, who won a Golden Globe for best actress in comedy, has made multiple attempts to appear as a contestant on Jeopardy! She applies every June for the show, and the Jeopardy application requires two online quizzes and an interview. Stone also attended Swift’s Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, and supported Swift at the “Poor Things” premiere.
Jennings hopes Swift would come to the audience if Stone competes on the game show.
During the Q&A session, Jennings also shared insights into his personality and how it relates to his hosting duties. He said he falls on the Lawful Neutral side of the Dungeons and Dragons alignment scale. However, Jennings acknowledged that a Jeopardy! host should be Lawful Good, and said he pretends to be Lawful Good on TV.
When asked if watching YouTube helps prepare for the show, Jennings emphasized the platform’s educational value. He said Jeopardy! rewards curiosity, and noted that YouTube offers a diverse expression of curiosity. Jennings uses YouTube to watch shows he missed because he is too sleepy to watch them when they air.
Jennings succeeded Alex Trebek as the face of one of television’s most enduring game shows. Before taking the hosting position, Jennings was already a Jeopardy! legend, having completed a 74-consecutive-game winning streak in 2004. During that remarkable run, Jennings won $2,520,700 in regular-season play.
The YouTube spinoff represents Jeopardy!’s continued evolution in the digital age, bringing the classic quiz format to a platform popular with online audiences. By featuring YouTube stars in the premiere episode, the show aims to bridge traditional television and online content creation, potentially introducing the game to viewers who consume most of their entertainment through streaming platforms.
The inclusion of Monet X Change, a prominent RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, in the premiere episode adds another layer of crossover appeal. The drag performer’s participation helps explain why Jennings was asked to compare the two competitions during his Q&A session. Both shows require different forms of performance and skill, though Jennings’ lighthearted response focused on the practical difference in wardrobe requirements rather than attempting a serious comparison of the competitive challenges.
Jennings’ candid responses during the Instagram Q&A demonstrate a willingness to engage with fans on topics extending well beyond traditional trivia. His comments about manifesting a friendship with Swift and his self-awareness about performing on television reveal a host comfortable showing personality alongside his encyclopedic knowledge. As Jeopardy! expands into new formats and platforms, Jennings continues to balance the show’s traditional values with contemporary cultural conversations.
