Popular TV Actor Dead at 44

Owain Rhys Davies, the Welsh actor best known for playing FBI Agent Wilson in the 2017 revival of “Twin Peaks,” has died suddenly at the age of 44. His family announced his death in an Instagram post on May 30, 2026, sparking an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment world.

The actor’s brother, Rhodri Davies, broke the news alongside their father, Conway Davies, telling followers that Owain had passed away unexpectedly. The cause of death has not yet been determined, with the family acknowledging a lingering mystery around the circumstances.

“It is with profound sadness that my father and I share the news that my brother, Owain, has passed away. This news will come as a great shock to many. While there are still questions that remain unanswered regarding the circumstances of his death, our understanding at this stage is that Owain passed suddenly, naturally, and peacefully,” Rhodri wrote in the family’s statement.

From Welsh Stages to David Lynch’s World

Born February 20, 1982, in Cardiff, Wales, Davies was raised in St. Clears in Carmarthenshire. He caught the acting bug early, performing in local theater productions that would eventually launch a career spanning stage, television, and film on both sides of the Atlantic.

Before his breakout screen roles, Davies established himself as a formidable stage presence, appearing on London’s West End in productions of “Mamma Mia!” and “The Wizard of Oz.” His television credits grew to include “The Indian Doctor” for the BBC, Hulu’s “The Relationship,” and the horror satire “A Serial Killer’s Guide To Life.”

But it was his casting in David Lynch and Mark Frost’s long-awaited revival of “Twin Peaks: The Return” that brought Davies international recognition. The 2017 reboot of the cult 1990s series introduced audiences to his FBI Agent Wilson — a role Davies described as the thrill of a lifetime.

In a May 2017 interview, Davies recalled the surreal experience of being cast by the legendary auteur. He had auditioned seven months before getting the call, by which point he assumed the part had gone to someone else. According to tributes shared by the BBC, the actor said he had to pull over his car and scream when his agent finally delivered the news. Lynch’s notorious secrecy meant Davies received the call on a Monday, was fitted for costumes by Wednesday, and was on set by Friday.

Tributes Pour In From Co-Stars

Davies also appeared in Disney’s “Alice Through The Looking Glass” film and the 2016 Netflix sci-fi drama “The OA,” sharing scenes with stars Brit Marling and Jason Isaacs. The official “Twin Peaks” Instagram account paid tribute to him, writing, “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him. Thank you for being a part of the world of Twin Peaks, Agent Wilson.”

“Downton Abbey” star Joanne Froggatt was among the first to publicly mourn the actor, describing him in an emotional tribute as “joy, and life and talent and kindness and fun and intelligence.” She added that her brain “can’t compute that we don’t get to hug him again.”

“Supernatural” actress Ruth Connell also remembered Davies as “a great friend” and “incredible talent,” writing that he was “ridiculously hilarious and so kind.” Actress Charity Wakefield shared a photo of the two of them dancing, calling him “one in a million.”

A Welsh Talent Lost Too Soon

The Welsh National Theatre issued its own statement honoring Davies, describing him as “a remarkable talent whose work enriched Welsh theatre and screen.” The organization said his “passion, creativity, and dedication to his craft made a lasting impact on the cultural life of Wales,” adding that “the Welsh performing arts community is poorer for his loss.”

According to reports surrounding his death, the family has not provided additional details about what led to his sudden passing. Rhodri Davies emphasized that while the circumstances remain unclear, the family believes his brother died peacefully.

In his Instagram tribute, Rhodri reflected on the depth of his brother’s relationships. He said Owain “was fortunate enough to have more than one family,” noting that his brother built “extraordinary, family-like bonds” with friends and colleagues throughout his career. He added that he was “incredibly proud” of his brother, and that the family takes “comfort in knowing how loved he was.”

At the time of his death, Davies had two projects in the pipeline: a film titled “La Fantasia” and the horror project “Jeff the Killer.” Neither has yet released information about how production will proceed.

The family said they would share further information in due course as they learn more and begin making funeral arrangements, while asking the public to respect their privacy. Rhodri described the global response to the news as “deeply moving,” thanking fans for keeping his brother in their thoughts.

Davies is survived by his father, Conway, and his brother, Rhodri. He was 44.
