Beloved Reality Star Dies by Suicide at Age 67

Months before beloved “Storage Wars” star Darrell Sheets died April 22 at 67 of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the FBI had assigned an agent to investigate the cyberbullying that police say drove him to take his own life.

Body camera footage from January 2026 captured Sheets speaking with Lake Havasu police about his alleged cyber stalker approximately three months before his death. During that conversation, Sheets told officers an FBI agent had informed him the investigation “could take a month or eight years” and that his case was “microscopic compared to what we’re looking at.”

The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, and police found no evidence to suggest anything other than what was listed in the medical examiner report. Police also reviewed Sheets’ cell phone and discovered text messages revealing “he was struggling with numerous things.”

A Handwritten Note Left Behind

Investigators with the Lake Havasu City Police Department recovered a handwritten note tucked inside a basket in a bathroom closet near where Sheets was found. The note pointed directly to online harassment as a source of unbearable anguish. It read, in part, “I could not take anymore the Facebook bulling, f*** you [redacted],” police said. The note also included the phrase “go back to bed.”

Journalist Adam S. Levy reported the details on July 8, 2026, more than two months after Sheets’ death. Police records revealing the new information were reported widely beginning July 8, 2026.

Personal Struggles Before His Death

Sheets’ girlfriend told police his son Brandon had visited days before his death, and that Sheets had been “devastated” since Brandon left and was “sad as hell” and went “down a rabbit hole.” She also described to investigators chronic insomnia that stress had caused for months, not just in the days immediately before April 22.

On that final night, Sheets complained he could not sleep and eventually rose from bed, positioning himself near his home office. His girlfriend later heard the sound of a gunshot. The pattern of sleeplessness driven by stress, she indicated, had worsened in the time preceding his death.

The Toll of Online Harassment

The note’s explicit mention of social media harassment has prompted renewed focus on the destructive toll cyberbullying can exact on public figures, who often appear, to outside observers, insulated from ordinary pressures by their visibility and success. For someone already prone to stress-induced sleeplessness, the relentless nature of social media harassment may compound existing vulnerabilities in ways that are difficult for outsiders to detect.

Sheets had been a fan favorite on the A&E competition series “Storage Wars,” which follows buyers who bid on the contents of abandoned storage units. His charisma and expertise made him one of the show’s most enduring presences. News of his passing in April prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow cast members, and the release of new details from the police report on July 8 and July 9, 2026 reignited that grief — this time, with a clearer and more troubling picture of what he faced privately.
