Vice President JD Vance went to Wisconsin to talk about benefit fraud. What he’s being remembered for is a botched impression of how people there pronounce the name of their own state — and the internet has not let it go.
Vance appeared in Milwaukee on July 8, 2026, speaking about the administration’s efforts to combat fraud in government assistance programs. Somewhere in the middle of it, he decided to be charming. He called Wisconsin “one of the most beautiful states in the union, especially this time of year.” Then he tried to do the accent.
It did not go the way he wanted.
“I love Wisconsin,” Vance said, before launching into his impression of a Northern Midwest drawl. “Or as you guys say, ‘Wis-cawntin.’ ‘Wis-cawnsin!'” He attempted it once, appeared to realize it hadn’t worked, then tried a second time with nearly identical results.
The Internet Reaches for the Spice Rack
The social media account Acyn posted a clip that quickly gained traction. X user Matt delivered what became the most memorable reaction: “If Vance were a spice, he’d be flour.”
Others piled on with the same culinary theme. An account posting as Worlds okest sister said Vance “has the personality of unseasoned, boiled chicken.” Commenters offered various theories about the mishap, with some suggesting the pronunciation had been written out incorrectly. Others noted that hearing the audio made the moment significantly more awkward than simply reading about it, and several pointed out that Vance appeared to recognize his error but then repeated it exactly the same way.
One interpretation suggested it might not have been an accent attempt at all — that Vance simply said the state’s name the same unremarkable way twice, which would arguably be worse since you can’t botch an accent you never tried.
The Poster No One Could See
The accent was not the only thing that went sideways.
During his remarks, Vance revealed a poster meant to display a photo of Markita Barnes, a Wisconsin woman convicted in March on 10 healthcare fraud charges. The image was central to his message about benefit program abuse, but stage lighting struck the poster at an unfortunate angle, washing it out completely. Despite the visual failure, Vance continued referencing and gesturing toward the unviewable image as though the audience could see it clearly.
The speech itself was built around the administration’s anti-fraud agenda. Vance pointed to alleged widespread abuse of government benefits and cited an investigation that had begun during the Biden administration as proof the current White House was going after fraud aggressively. He accused Democrats of ignoring the problem. And at one point he suggested Wisconsin would be better off with a different governor entirely — a jab at Tony Evers, the state’s current governor, who is a Democrat.
A Growing Highlight Reel
The Milwaukee incident adds to a growing list of awkward public moments for Vance. Observers have increasingly compared him to Selina Meyer, the bumbling vice president from HBO’s “Veep.” Those comparisons intensified after Vance stopped a rally speech partway through to check whether President Donald Trump had called him.
The White House is clearly not sending their best.
The whole thing has the quality of a bit that keeps compounding — the accent that wasn’t, the poster nobody could see, the joke a room full of Wisconsinites presumably watched die in real time. Individually, minor. Together, the kind of five minutes that follows a politician around.
If all the milk in Wisconsin curdled after this, it would be hard to act surprised.
