For the evening, which celebrated the biggest names in athletics, the royal kept things understated in a black suit paired with a white button-down shirt left open at the collar. Though he was honored during the ceremony, Harry attended without Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and their two children, 7-year-old Archie and 5-year-old Lilibet. He told the assembled photographers they were the “most polite” he had encountered in his years in the public eye.
Honored for His Invictus Work
Harry was recognized not as a professional athlete but for establishing the Invictus Games, a competition held every two years for wounded military personnel and veterans, according to TIME.
“Sport held me together,” Harry told TIME. He recalled being a student who struggled with academics and said athletics were essential to keeping him in school.
He went on to describe the profound effect the games have had on participants, noting that the competition does more than transform lives — it can save them. Harry said the belief is rooted in the many individuals who have approached him to say the games gave them a reason to keep going. Next year’s Invictus Games will return to England after several editions hosted in other countries — a development that arrives against the backdrop of Harry’s complicated relationship with his family.
