A British couple celebrating their honeymoon died on Monday, August 17, when the private helicopter carrying them to a Greek island exploded in a fireball after suffering what investigators believe was a mechanical failure in flight. Alexander Cromie, 31, and his new wife, Marie Ebert, 30, perished alongside their pilot, Giorgos Raikos, 55, when the Bell 206 aircraft went down near the Examela area of Sifnos, an Aegean island in the Cyclades, at around 6:15 p.m. local time.
The crash triggered an alarm heard across the island, and emergency services rushed to the scene, but all three victims were confirmed dead upon arrival. Two firefighters and a single fire engine raced to the arid hillside where the wreckage burned, while a rescue team dispatched from Syros arrived later by the Fire Department’s RAFNAR speedboat. A column of thick, dark smoke rose from the site, which sat in an uninhabited area away from any homes.
A Short Flight That Ended in Tragedy
The couple had chosen to fly rather than endure a ferry journey of up to five hours from the mainland. Their Bell 206 private air taxi lifted off from the village of Markopoulo, southeast of Athens, and was scheduled to touch down at approximately 6:20 p.m. local time. Around 6:15 p.m., the pilot began losing control of the aircraft. The helicopter came down close to its intended landing location in the Tholos area of Sifnos.
CCTV footage captured the aircraft rotating erratically and losing altitude rapidly before impact. The crash was followed immediately by a fire that engulfed the wreckage. Authorities have opened a formal investigation focused on the final minutes of the flight. Greek pilot Raikos, a former air force pilot and father of three who had reportedly been hired two months before the crash, was described by those familiar with him as highly experienced. Mechanical failure is considered the expected cause, though investigators have not yet confirmed it officially.
Residents near the crash site told police they heard something unusual in the moments before impact. Manolis Fountoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, described what witnesses reported: “It experienced mechanical failure in the air, residents say it made a loud, strange noise, like military aircraft.”
Who Were Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert?
Bristol-born Alexander Cromie served as vice president of private wealth solutions at Blackstone’s London office, a role he had held for four years at the US-based investment management firm. A University of Sheffield economics graduate, he had previously held positions at NatWest, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and BNP Paribas before joining Blackstone.
London-born Marie Ebert was a senior specialist in market reputation at Bain & Company, one of the UK’s so-called “Big Three” consulting firms. A University of Exeter graduate fluent in German, she had built her career across asset management, private equity, and consulting, including a stint at investment firm Coller Capital, before joining Bain in July of last year. Her social media showed travels to Caribbean islands, the French Riviera, and destinations along northern Italy’s scenic lakes.
Blackstone expressed its grief over the loss, with a spokesperson saying: “We are shocked by the tragic passing of three people including our colleague Alex Cromie and his wife Marie Ebert, who were celebrating their honeymoon.”
Tributes From Employers and Colleagues
Bain & Company said Ebert was cherished by her London colleagues and demonstrated outstanding professional abilities that earned universal respect, adding that the firm was supporting her family and coworkers while also expressing sympathy for the families of Cromie and pilot Raikos.
A Bain spokesperson said the firm was heartbroken and supporting all affected during this difficult time.
The crash site drew emergency responders from across the island and nearby waters, but the speed and intensity of the inferno left little chance of survival. Greek authorities have confirmed they are examining all available evidence, including the CCTV footage of the aircraft’s erratic final moments, as they work to determine the precise sequence of events that brought the helicopter down just minutes before it was due to land. The families of all three victims have been notified, and Greek officials offered their condolences to those grieving the loss of the newlyweds and the experienced pilot who had been at the controls.
