A neighbor’s welfare check call in Fruitland Park, Florida, led to the discovery of an Amazon delivery driver deceased in her van on Aug. 11, 2026, in a case that has authorities investigating potential hazardous exposure after a responding deputy appeared to be overcome by fumes at the scene.
Patrick Miranda contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office via the non-emergency number at approximately 7:22 p.m. following his observation of an idling Amazon truck that had remained stationary near the end of his driveway on Clark Road for roughly four hours. The vehicle appeared occupied based on visible personal items, but showed no movement or driver activity.
“I see the phone is still plugged in. The backpack is there and again the car is running, but there is no one,” Miranda said. “It seemed kind of strange.”
Miranda initially sought either an abandoned vehicle report or a welfare check due to the unusual circumstances. When deputies arrived, they encountered a far graver situation than anticipated.
Deputy Reacts to Fumes at the Scene
Home surveillance cameras owned by Miranda documented what happened next. According to his account, the responding deputy accessed the front passenger door initially and was visibly impacted by something emanating from inside. Upon opening the rear sliding doors, the officer discovered the woman unconscious in the back compartment of the still-running vehicle. The deputy subsequently stepped away from the truck and appeared lightheaded following the exposure.
Speculation circulated among officers and other personnel present about what might have triggered the deputy’s physical reaction. “I’m not sure if there were fumes from either the vent, if there’s a package,” Miranda said. “There was a lot of speculation at the time from both the officers and the other people involved.”
Firefighters in Gas Masks, Hazmat Precautions Taken
The unusual reaction triggered concerns about possible toxic materials, prompting Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS to deploy hazmat protocols. Firefighters donned gas masks upon arrival, and the perimeter around the van was secured. Before emergency medical treatment could begin, personnel used a fire hose to spray down the woman, removing any potential contaminants from her body and clothing.
Miranda observed the response team shift to lifesaving measures once decontamination was complete. Fire rescue units stayed on site for multiple hours afterward, seemingly conducting an examination and cleanup of the delivery van.
Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS transported the driver to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not disclosed her identity.
