A Democratic strategist who regularly appears on Fox News has publicly refused a holiday present from President Donald Trump — a personalized “Trump 2028” cap that came with a handwritten message. Jessica Tarlov, a rotating co-host on “The Five,” revealed the exchange during a late July interview on the MeidasTouch show “On Sunday with Jack Cocchiarella,” making clear she has zero interest in warming relations with the White House.
Constitutional Concerns Behind the Rejection
Trump, 80, began selling the merchandise in April 2025 despite acknowledging the Constitution is “pretty clear” that he is “not allowed” to pursue another term. The Constitution explicitly prohibits a third presidential bid. Yet the president displayed one of the caps at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on July 24, 2026, and has recently floated what he described as a fourth White House run.
Tarlov, 42, joined Fox News in 2017 as a contributor and now serves as one of the network’s most prominent liberal commentators. During the MeidasTouch appearance, where she promoted her forthcoming book “I Disagree: Winning Arguments Without Losing Friends,” she discussed the gift and the note Trump included — a joke thanking her for her support. She told the program that Trump “will do everything in his power to be able to stick around as long as possible — and certainly if Steve Bannon gets his way,” adding that she is “not really interested in palling around or playing nice.”
Bannon’s Prediction and a Constitutional Warning
Her mention of Steve Bannon, who previously served as chief strategist in Trump’s White House and currently hosts a MAGA podcast, was deliberate. Bannon has publicly forecast a 2028 Trump campaign and victory, constitutional limits notwithstanding. Tarlov appears to view such rhetoric not as mere political posturing but as a genuine signal worth monitoring.
Fox News colleagues have urged Tarlov to meet Trump in person, insisting she would find him charming. She dismissed the suggestion outright, saying she has no desire to be won over and prefers to keep her distance. She also acknowledged she is “not good at faking a smile.”
A Gift She Did Not Want
The upcoming book Tarlov was promoting centers on persuasive dialogue that maintains personal relationships — an approach she seems willing to deploy everywhere except the Oval Office. Her Christmas hat remains unworn, a symbol of a line she refuses to cross.
Tarlov Draws a Line — but Defends Mamdani
Despite her own stance, Tarlov does not believe every Democrat must shun the president. She defended New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s November 21, 2025, White House visit, arguing he secured what she described as investment commitments worth billions of dollars for New York while maintaining his critical stance and refusing to compromise his principles. Mamdani was not even smiling in photographs from the meeting, Tarlov noted, treating it as a transaction rather than an embrace.
The contrast was intentional: delivering for constituents justifies engagement; seeking personal rapport with Trump does not — at least not for her.
Trump’s Past Attacks on Tarlov
The relationship has not always involved holiday gestures. In April, Trump attacked Tarlov on Truth Social after she cited his negative polling on “The Five,” calling her “one of the Least Attractive and Talented People on all of Television” and describing her voice as “so grating and terrible” he had to turn her off. He demanded Fox News executives remove her from the air, labeling her “a real loser.” The network left her in place. Tarlov had reported during that period that most surveys showed Trump’s approval at 35 percent — precisely the type of remark that provoked his angry response.
She remains a rotating co-host on “The Five,” often the only liberal panelist challenging pro-Trump talking points. Her book emphasizes exactly that talent — arguing a position without destroying the relationship. With Trump himself, though, she appears to have concluded no relationship was ever possible.
