On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the operators of the pedophilia chat room that Jim Thornton, the 61-year-old former “Wheel of Fortune” announcer, is said to have used aboard a flight in May released a public statement in defense of the site, contending that the uproar that ended his job is precisely why such a forum is necessary.
LifeLine Chat, the group behind the site, issued the statement four days after Sony Pictures Television fired Thornton on September 4 from the game show where he had served as announcer since 2011. Its operators rejected the notion that criminal activity takes place on the site.
Chat Room’s Operators Defend Its Existence
“LifeLine is aware of mainstream media coverage following its alleged use by a TV celebrity on an airplane,” the group said in its statement. “Since the news broke, we have been overwhelmed with visitors both well-intentioned and otherwise.”
The group said in the statement that it runs a support chat room for people who are attracted to children and adolescents, and that it maintains firm bans on illegal conduct of any kind, including the passing around of criminalized images. Members who break those rules, it said, are cut off quickly and their posts deleted as fast as possible.
Addressing what the operators described as frequent questions about why a place like LifeLine exists at all, they said it does so because most people who are attracted to minors are entirely able to act responsibly while being severely distressed by the stigma attached to their feelings. Such people need somewhere to talk, the operators said, which produces better mental health and, in turn, better outcomes for them and for the communities where they live.
Users may send “messages that the public may consider ‘offensive’ so long as they do not cross legal boundaries or put anyone at risk of harm,” the statement said, adding that the approach has steered users away from poor choices that would have put themselves or other people in danger. In most cases, the operators said, minor-attracted people have no safe path to professional help.
Citing the “severe risk of being reported to authorities simply for disclosing one’s feelings,” the statement asked who would pursue therapy while facing a genuine danger of being exposed and cast out as a “pedophile,” and said the figurative lynching of the celebrity who allegedly used its chat room makes the point plain.
“LifeLine exists precisely because the world is so incredibly hateful and punitive that minor-attracted people have no other means of support,” the operators said in closing.
Fired After a Sony Investigation
Sony Pictures Television, which produces “Wheel of Fortune,” suspended Thornton on Tuesday, September 1, while it investigated allegations it did not then specify. Four days later, on Friday, September 4, a studio spokesperson confirmed that “Jim Thornton’s employment with ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has been terminated, effective immediately.” The studio offered no specifics about the accusations and gave no reasoning for its decision.
Thornton’s work is being cut from the upcoming season. Sony said when it suspended him that it was recasting the role while it investigated, and no permanent successor had been named as of the firing. The 44th season, with Ryan Seacrest as host and Vanna White on hand, is expected in mid-September. Taping has continued, and Seacrest has returned to the set.
A Passenger’s May Photographs
In May, Thornton was traveling from North Carolina to Los Angeles when a passenger seated nearby took pictures of his laptop screen, reported it to a flight attendant and turned the photos over to the crew. American Airlines said officers met a passenger when the plane arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14, though the carrier declined to name the traveler. Police interviewed Thornton after the landing and released him.
Published in early September, the images seemed to capture chat messages on his display. In them he wears a black jacket with the “Wheel of Fortune” logo embroidered on the sleeve and appears to be typing into the chat room. Time stamps in the images suggest he spent close to an hour on the site. He was later photographed running a Google search that referenced “panic.”
Thornton has not been arrested or charged with any crime.
The Announcer’s Attorney Pushes Back
His attorney, Allison Hart, has said Thornton “never viewed, downloaded or consumed” illegal material involving children. She said he threw himself into suicide-prevention work after a close relative died by suicide two years ago and has since spent time in crisis chat rooms trying to help people struggling with suicidal thoughts.
According to Hart, he was trying to reach the suicide-prevention site 988lifeline.org and its forum at chat.988lifeline.org, but ended up on a similarly named site after someone he knew from a suicide-prevention group sent him a link to a chat room that had nothing to do with crisis support — the one captured in the photographs. Once he understood what the site was, he left immediately and has not gone back, she said. The officers who questioned him about the passenger’s complaint talked with him for no more than five minutes, decided on the spot that nothing improper had happened and told him he could go, she said.
Thornton was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and earned a linguistics degree from Marshall University. He joined all-news radio KNX 1070 in Los Angeles in 1985 as a traffic reporter and later anchored afternoons there. He took over from announcer Charlie O’Donnell, who died in 2010; Thornton auditioned that December and was confirmed on June 13, 2011. His résumé also includes “The Price Is Right,” “The Soup,” “Jeopardy!” and “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” which he joined on ABC in 2021 alongside then-host Pat Sajak and White, plus voice work on “Monsters, Inc.” and the video games “Wall-E” and “Mafia II.”
Beyond Sony’s statement, the show has said nothing about the matter. Thornton has not spoken publicly, and his social media accounts have gone dark.
