Elon Musk Makes Chilling Threat to Renowned Journalist

Elon Musk had a one-line answer for the tech journalist who predicted he could end up behind bars if Democrats retake Congress.

The billionaire behind SpaceX and Tesla went on a posting spree on his platform X on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, replying to critics and to reports that he would be a prime target of congressional investigators should Democrats flip the House or Senate in November’s midterm elections. One reply, aimed at veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher, did most of the traveling.

“Live by the sword, die by the sword. Sounds like Swisher really wants to go to prison,” Musk wrote.

The Clip That Set Musk Off

Two days earlier, Swisher had turned up on The Bulwark’s podcast “Receipts with Catherine Rampell” and worked through what a Democratic Congress might mean for the world’s richest engineer. “Under Kamala Harris, he might be in jail right now, right?” Swisher said, adding that the point was not vengeance but the volume of open questions surrounding his various companies.

She kept going. If President Donald Trump lost both chambers, she said, she would be worried on Musk’s behalf regardless of his wealth, because agencies he helped gut had been looking into his businesses and roughly half a dozen inquiries were halted. Investigators would restart, she predicted, and Musk would sit at the top of the list.

From DOGE to a Starlink Slowdown

The prison jab was not his only post of the day. Politico had published a piece to X on Tuesday, Oct. 20, titled “Capitol agenda: Dem gavels are coming for Elon Musk,” and Musk shared it with a warning of his own: “Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets.”

House Democrats want to examine his stretch leading DOGE, which included dismantling agencies Congress had mandated and funded. Allegations that he recently cut off Starlink access to Ukraine are expected to draw scrutiny as well, alongside what members described as a glut of alleged conflicts of interest, given the multibillion-dollar federal contracts and subsidies flowing to SpaceX and Tesla.

That thread pulled in Wall Street Journal national security reporter Alexander Ward, who replied to one of Musk’s swipes at mainstream coverage by asking whether it amounted to a comment on his story, then linked his report headlined “Musk Ordered Starlink Slowdown That Blindsided Ukraine.” Musk has blamed the U.S. military and Trump for the deadly disruption in Ukraine, saying the failure was Starshield, the military version of Starlink, which he said is owned and operated solely by the U.S. government.

Not everyone thought Swisher’s forecast was harmless. Robby Soave, co-host of The Hill’s commentary show “Rising” and a senior editor for Reason Magazine, argued in a column that liberal figures are increasingly promising prosecutions of their opponents. “This is America, and losing should mean, well, losing,” Soave wrote. Journalist Mehdi Hasan, meanwhile, noted on X that the only time Musk ever went after him personally was when he raised the same idea of a congressional investigation.

Her Answer Lands on ‘Pivot’

Musk spent part of the same day going after Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico, against whom he has reportedly spent more than $150 million. The flare-up also arrived during a busy stretch for Swisher, who launched the “High Stakes” podcast with Hillary Clinton the week before his post. On Oct. 11, his first wife, Justine Musk, appeared on “On with Kara Swisher,” dropped into the “Pivot” feed, alongside filmmaker Alex Gibney to discuss Gibney’s documentary “Musk.” She talked about his intense drive and his identity as an engineer. Musk declined to take part in the film.

Swisher got the last word on her own turf. The Oct. 23 episode of “Pivot,” the semiweekly show she co-hosts with NYU professor Scott Galloway on the Vox Media Podcast Network, runs one hour and eight minutes and opens with her response to Musk’s post. The hosts also break down the contrasting SpaceX and Tesla earnings reports, a potential merger of the two companies, and a conversation with Sacha Baron Cohen about satire.
