Horror Movie Star Dead at 72

C.W. Morgan, the actor who played the father of original Ghostface killer Billy Loomis in the 1996 slasher “Scream,” has died at 72. Medical examiner records show he died Aug. 30, 2026, in Los Angeles County, though word of his death did not reach the public until Thursday, Oct. 8, when coroner’s records surfaced.

Morgan’s daughter, Renata Macfie, had confirmed his death far earlier, in a Facebook post on Aug. 31 accompanied by a throwback photo of the two of them from her childhood.

A Daughter’s Facebook Tribute

“Loosing [sic] you has left the biggest hole in my heart,” Macfie wrote, opening the post by saying she would never find the right words for it.

“I miss you endlessly already,” she added. Macfie wrote that she would carry on their drives along Mulholland and their Starbucks outings, called herself grateful and lucky to have had him as her father, and closed by saying life would never be the same without the poorly timed jokes she inherited from him.

What the Records Show

Morgan’s cause of death remains unclear. Records indicate he died in a bathroom, and a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said officers responded to a call for a death investigation and that the death appeared to have been from natural causes.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a report of an unconscious adult male. Morgan was not taken to a hospital, and the case was turned over to the coroner.

The Secret That Broke the Loomis Family

Born Curtis Wade Morgan in Arizona, the actor landed the role that would define his screen legacy as Hank Loomis, a prominent lawyer and the ex-husband of Nancy Loomis, played by Laurie Metcalf. The character sits at the center of the mystery that drives the first film: Hank’s secret affair with Maureen Prescott — the mother of heroine Sidney Prescott — broke up the Loomis family and sent his son Billy, played by Skeet Ulrich, into a murderous rage against his own friend group.

One of the movie’s pivotal sequences has police questioning Billy about the Woodsboro killings while his father turns up to vouch for his innocence, unaware of what his son has done. Morgan came back to the franchise four years later for a flashback cameo in 2000’s “Scream 3.”

What began as a single self-aware horror hit has since grown into a seven-film franchise that has also spawned television series, merchandise and games, keeping the Loomis family saga in circulation for new generations of horror fans.

From “Aeon Flux” to “Nash Bridges”

Morgan worked as an actor, director and voice actor. His other credits include “Midnight Calls” (1991), “The Last of His Tribe” (1992), the thriller “Metro” and “The Last Express” (1997). He also lent his voice to the character Bargeld in MTV’s animated series “Aeon Flux” (1995). His final screen role was as Coleman Spencer in an episode of “Nash Bridges,” which aired in 2000.

He resurfaced for horror fans in a 2023 video posted to the YouTube channel The UK Horror Scene, where he looked back on his “Scream” character. In the short clip, Morgan warned anyone who had not yet seen the movie to look away before delivering the spoiler: Billy is the killer.

Morgan is survived by his daughter, Renata Macfie, whose tribute remains the family’s only public word on his death.
