Prince Harry Makes Surprise Appearance Near William

Prince Harry made a surprise appearance at a black-tie fundraiser for Ukraine in central London on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, while his estranged brother, Prince William, addressed a charity ball by video six miles away.

The Duke of Sussex arrived at the United for Freedom gala at the Imperial War Museum in a tuxedo, smiling and waving at the cameras, his bodyguard a step behind him. The event raised money for organizations supporting Ukraine, where the war entered its fourth year earlier in 2026.

Harry’s Appeal at the Imperial War Museum

Harry spoke about the long historical ties between Britain and Ukraine before turning to what he had seen on his own recent trips to the country. He told the gala that those visits had left him unable to turn away, describing encounters with Ukrainians who had lost limbs, homes and loved ones and who still found the strength to rebuild.

He credited Ukrainians with holding the frontline while keeping businesses open and schools running, and with pushing forward technology he said is reshaping modern warfare. But he cautioned against treating that endurance as grounds for the rest of the world to accept the suffering behind it, arguing that Ukrainians should not have to keep proving how much they can take.

“Their courage deserves more than our admiration. It deserves our resolve,” Harry said.

William’s Video Tribute in Fulham

Six miles to the west, at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, guests at the inaugural Bowelbabe Fund Rebel Ball watched a pre-recorded message from the Prince of Wales, who had spent the day in Abergavenny, Wales, and did not attend in person. The ball raised money for the Bowelbabe Fund of the late journalist Dame Deborah James, who died of bowel cancer in 2022, and for Cancer Research UK.

The evening fell on what would have been her 45th birthday. Among the guests were her friends and family, and the fundraising ball was hosted by TV presenter Gaby Roslin.

William recalled meeting Dame Deborah in May 2022 and presenting her with her damehood in her parents’ garden, where, he said, they discussed her achievements, her ambitions and the legacy she wanted the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK to leave behind. He praised the humor and optimism she carried through her illness — a quality she called “rebellious hope” — and said the fund had spent four and a half years backing pioneering research that buys patients more time with the people closest to them.

“Tonight would have been Deborah’s 45th birthday and I know she would have wanted everyone dancing, celebrating and making memories,” William said in the message, describing her as an amazing woman whose work continued to save and improve lives.

Meghan’s Advent Calendar Goes on Sale

The parallel engagements capped a day that had already brought news from the other half of the Sussex household. Earlier on Oct. 1, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, launched a £112 ($148) advent calendar, her first commercial venture since relocating.

The calendar holds 24 gourmet chocolates said to be inspired by her home and garden in Montecito, Calif., and includes a festive illustration of the £11 million mansion she and Harry called home for six years.

For Harry, the Ukraine gala was the latest in a run of public engagements he has carried out in Britain since the family’s return to the U.K. in late August, with his charitable causes at the center of them. The brothers, whose estrangement has played out in public for years, spent Thursday evening a short drive apart without appearing together.
