Trump and Melania Marriage Rumors ERUPT Again

A political commentator spent part of a YouTube broadcast on Sept. 27, 2026, dissecting the first lady’s glowing description of her husband’s work habits, and the segment sent talk about the state of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s marriage roaring back to life. Political commentator David Pakman, host of the YouTube program “The David Pakman Show,” argued that Melania Trump is not positioned to make that assessment.

“In fact, we have reason to believe she’s completely estranged from Donald Trump,” Pakman said.

The estrangement claims circulating as of Sept. 30 remain unverified.

The White House announced it will open its gardens to visitors on Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18, with tours of the South Lawn, Rose Garden, Kitchen Garden, the expanded Beehive and the new helipad. It is unclear whether the first lady will appear, amid the estrangement rumors.

What the First Lady Said

Melania Trump appeared Sept. 23 on “Fox & Friends.” The hosts asked her how the president is doing in his second term compared with his first, and what he is doing differently. Her answer called him very focused, said he has a lot on his plate and credited him with doing the best he can. “He’s from morning until evening nonstop working,” she told the hosts.

His speeches and decisions get her unsoftened assessments, she added, and she acknowledged that those verdicts are not always welcome.

Other first ladies came off as less independent from their husbands than Melania Trump does, Pakman said, and the two appear to be living mostly apart, keeping separate bedrooms on the occasions when they are in the same building. Detailed knowledge of the president’s schedule was something he allowed she could have, and he said she may check his calendar. But a tally of how many hours he actually logs is something Pakman questioned she would know, and he pointed to blocks of executive time, golf, television viewing, a 12-to-5 schedule and an increased frequency of the president falling asleep. A lunch break typically follows the president’s first official meeting, which his public schedule frequently shows beginning at 11 a.m. Cameras are not present for the most important work presidents do, Pakman also acknowledged.

Scrutiny During the State Visit

During the Chinese state visit of Sept. 23–25, video showed Trump reaching for Melania Trump’s hand as the couple descended red-carpeted stairs and keeping hold of it as she tried to pull away. Separately, at Joint Base Andrews, the first lady barely reacted when Trump patted her on the back. One person said of the footage: “She’s always pulling away from him.”

On Sept. 25, at the National Archives during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Washington state visit, Melania Trump appeared to pull back as Xi moved toward her for a handshake, prompting viral debate over whether she avoided it. She had already greeted Xi and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan earlier in the visit.

Reports of Separate Lives

Trump biographer Michael Wolff said on the Daily Beast podcast in May 2025 that the president and the first lady lead separate lives and are separated. A fraud was what the White House labeled Wolff in response. Wolff wrote “Fire & Fury,” published in 2018, and “All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America.”

Wolff suggested that Melania Trump’s Sept. 15 appearance in North Carolina may have served another purpose: generating material for her Amazon project, according to a report published Oct. 1. As of Oct. 1, the first lady is preparing further programming for Amazon, following her earlier documentary, the report says.

Reporting in 2025 by Shawn McCreesh, a New York Times White House reporter, said the first lady does not really make her home at the White House: she drops out of public view for weeks at a stretch, staying instead at Trump Tower in Manhattan or at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Two people with knowledge of her schedule told McCreesh she had spent fewer than 14 days at the White House since the Jan. 20, 2025, inauguration, a tally measured as of that May 2025 report. Administration officials told McCreesh that the public did not know how often she was there, though they declined to offer specifics.

A Florida-based political source told People in February 2025 that shooting her Amazon Prime documentary about her life and her time as first lady had been the focus of her trips. Filming took place in several locations, including the White House.

Separate Bedrooms and Rumors

A 2026 book by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump,” reports that the White House master bedroom, known internally as Room 219, belongs to the first lady, while the president took Room 220, next to the Yellow Oval. Not since Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, has a presidential couple regularly used separate bedrooms, descriptions of the Trumps note.

Some accounts hold that the couple has never been better. Tension is linked by other accounts to the president’s reported closeness with his executive assistant, Natalie Harp, though those claims are unverified. Rumors about Trump’s relationship with the aide have drawn pushback from the first lady’s senior advisor. At an event, the president called Harp over, and Melania Trump reportedly left her seat next to him afterward.

Melania Trump splits her time between Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago. She stayed away from the president’s Manhattan hush money trial, where he was convicted of 34 counts of altering business records related to hush money payments. During the first administration, she waited months before moving into the White House so that Barron Trump, then 10, would not have to change schools midway through the year. She has since said she and her son are spending less and less time together.
