President Donald Trump turned a stretch of his midterm campaign rally in Clarksville, Tenn., into a riff about looks on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, aiming a sarcastic jab at former Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance while the women standing behind him laughed along.
Trump, 80, had been recalling the campaign rallies that Harris and former President Joe Biden held during the COVID-19 pandemic when he wandered off his prepared remarks.
“Remember that beautiful Kamala? Somebody said she’s so beautiful. Really?” Trump said, pausing to let the line land as the arena filled with cheers and laughter.
Several of the women arrayed behind him laughed at the crack. One flashed a thumbs-down. Another shook her head vigorously. A clip of the moment, posted to X by the account FactPost, carried a caption claiming the president had called Harris ugly.
A Familiar Riff on the Trail
The Harris line was not the only beauty-related detour of the afternoon. When a woman in the crowd shouted that she loved him, Trump answered, “I love you too, darling,” then asked for a look at her and pronounced her beautiful.
From there he slid into one of his standard grievances, telling the crowd a politician is not allowed to call a woman beautiful anymore and that doing so can finish a career. He summed himself up as a product of the old school.
That complaint has been traveling with him. At a Nebraska rally, he watched his 35-year-old aide, Natalie Harp, walk offstage and called her perfect. At an Oklahoma rally, he spent close to two minutes praising 31-year-old communications adviser Margo Martin, calling her beautiful more than once and praising her loyalty.
A Line He Has Used Before
Trump has circled back to Harris’ appearance repeatedly, sometimes calling her beautiful before insisting he has the edge. In a livestreamed conversation with Elon Musk in August 2024, he picked apart a Time magazine cover illustration of Harris, saying it resembled a glamorous actress and a great first lady — his wife, Melania Trump — rather than Harris herself, before allowing that she is a beautiful woman.
Less than a week later, at a Pennsylvania rally in 2024, he cautioned the crowd that complimenting a woman’s looks could sink a political career, then declared that he was the better-looking of the two candidates.
Melania, a Documentary and One Star
Trump also let the Clarksville crowd in on a bit of domestic critique, saying First Lady Melania Trump dislikes this style of speaking and considers it neither elegant nor presidential. His reply to her, he said, was that it may not be presidential, but he won the election in a landslide.
He called his wife a very elegant woman and turned to her documentary, which he claimed was the No. 1 film of the year. He added that he was not thrilled about the ranking, joking that there is only room for one star in a family and that he does not need the movie business.
Why He Came to Tennessee
The Saturday afternoon rally at F&M Bank Arena, in a city about 45 miles northwest of Nashville, was staged for Tennessee Republicans on the ballot ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, and the Republican National Committee said it was meant to “supercharge” GOP candidates for the final stretch.
Trump openly wondered why he was there at all, noting that Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., and Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., who is running for governor, are both polling ahead in their races, and that he has carried the state by lopsided margins. Sometimes, he said, it is nice to go somewhere you do not have to be and thank the people who elected you.
He then told the room that the affection in it is the reason he finds rallies easy. “I could say the stupidest things, and you’d clap,” he told the crowd, which responded with a “Trump, Trump, Trump!” chant. He quickly added that his side sticks to common-sense positions instead — a border, low taxes, a strong military.
Not every voter who backed him in 2024 is convinced the embrace helps. A Politico poll found that 26 percent of 2024 Trump voters think Republican candidates in their district would do better by breaking with the president, while about two-thirds of MAGA voters still favor candidates who stay aligned with him. Trump also called Hagerty onstage, urged the crowd to vote Republican and repeated a request he has made in state after state: pretend he is on the ballot, too.
