Two Killed During Super Bowl Celebration

A double homicide in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, early Monday morning, February 10, 2025, cast a dark shadow over the city’s Super Bowl celebrations, where police discovered two men dead at a scene with evidence of at least 55 shots fired. Investigators recovered a weapon from the area.

The shooting occurred at 3:30 a.m. at Adams Avenue and Claridge Street in Philadelphia’s Olney section, approximately five miles from the downtown celebration zones.

Police responding to multiple 911 calls found 30-year-old Rudy Reyes dead in the passenger seat of a Jeep SUV. Wesley Toribio-Diaz, 32, was discovered deceased next to the vehicle.

Surveillance footage revealed a white sedan pulling up alongside the victims’ vehicle before two suspects emerged and opened fire. The Jeep was hit more than 20 times, with evidence markers littering the street. The suspects fled in the white four-door sedan and were last seen near Adams Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, police reported.

The double homicide occurred as the city grappled with widespread violence and destruction following the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Police reported approximately 18 arrests and 29 citations for disorderly contact across the city in one of the most destructive sports celebrations in recent Philadelphia history.

Downtown Philadelphia bore the brunt of the chaos, with Market and Broad Street around City Hall becoming epicenters of destruction. Vandals targeted multiple businesses, with significant damage reported at Santander Bank, Chase Bank, Free People store, and Brooks Brothers. Security footage showed crowds breaking windows and looting merchandise while overwhelmed police attempted to maintain order.

The Philadelphia Police Department deployed additional units throughout the night, including mounted officers and bicycle patrols. Despite these measures, celebrants destroyed four city sanitation trucks and vandalized multiple police vehicles.

Near 12th and Market streets, the situation intensified when revelers hijacked a delivery truck loaded with linens. The crowd scattered the cargo across the intersection before setting it on fire, creating a large blaze that required an emergency response. Firefighters struggled to navigate through dense crowds to reach the scene.

Five police officers sustained injuries during confrontations with crowds, leading to arrests for assault on law enforcement. Two additional suspects face aggravated assault charges, while others were charged with reckless endangerment.

The violence mirrored previous unrest during NFC Championship celebrations two weeks prior when a shooting left a 20-year-old man with wounds to his lower abdomen and hip area, and another man suffered grazes from gunfire near Broad and Spring Garden streets. Police later arrested 18-year-old Amere Wright in connection with that shooting, recovering his clothing, cell phone, and a loaded handgun.

Infrastructure damage included at least five traffic light poles torn from their foundations. Security cameras captured groups carrying the poles through streets near historic sculptures. Police reported extensive damage to bus shelters and street signs, and multiple building façades suffered vandalism.

The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to numerous fires throughout the night, including those started with stolen property and debris. Officials documented six separate incidents where crowds obstructed emergency response vehicles.

The city’s Emergency Operations Center, activated for the Super Bowl celebrations, coordinated responses between police, fire, and emergency medical services throughout the night. Despite preparations, including the greasing of light poles and increased police presence, authorities struggled to contain the chaos across multiple city sectors.

Philadelphia’s victory parade, scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2025, will follow Broad Street through Center City. Police officials announced plans for enhanced security measures, including additional officers and barricades along the parade route.

As investigators process evidence from the double homicide scene, including surveillance footage and ballistic evidence, police have yet to identify suspects or establish a motive.
