Beloved Mayor Fatally Injured in Head-On Crash

The community of Green River, Utah, is mourning the loss of Mayor Ren Hatt, who was killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Friday, December 5, 2025. The 40-year-old leader died at the scene of the crash that occurred on U.S. Route 6 approximately 8 miles west of Green River at 9:40 p.m. local time.

A 2021 Freightliner semi-truck was traveling westbound when it drifted into the eastbound lanes and struck the front passenger side of Hatt’s 2020 Hyundai Palisade. The semi driver was uninjured in the collision. Impairment is not suspected, and the investigation is ongoing.

Hatt had recently been reelected to a second term as mayor, receiving 65% of the vote. City officials called his death a devastating loss for the community. “Mayor Hatt was a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about the people of Green River and worked tirelessly on their behalf,” officials stated.

The town held a candlelight vigil on Monday, December 8, to honor the fallen mayor.

A funeral service for Hatt was held on Saturday, December 13. His fiancée, Maria Sykes, shared the news of his death with the community, expressing the profound loss felt by all who knew him.

Hatt served multiple roles in the small Utah community. In addition to his duties as mayor, he worked as a teacher at Green River High School. Councilmember Bo Harrison is now serving as acting mayor, working alongside City Manager Edward Castro Bennett to maintain continuity in local government.

The mayor came from a family with deep roots in public service. His grandfather, Rey Lloyd Hatt, served 18 years as mayor of Green River, establishing a legacy of civic leadership that the younger Hatt continued.

Before entering politics, Hatt built an impressive educational and professional background. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2014 and went on to work as a policy specialist for Tennessee Medicaid. Despite opportunities elsewhere, he chose to return to his hometown to serve the community where he grew up.

During his high school years, Hatt excelled as an all-state center fielder for Green River High School. His athletic achievements were matched by his early interest in leadership and public service, qualities that would define his adult life.

Hatt also helped manage his family’s business, Hatt Ranch, which offers pheasant hunting experiences. The operation allowed him to maintain connections to the land and traditions that shaped the region.

Community members remembered Hatt for his approachability and commitment to transparent governance. His hands-on approach to leadership earned him widespread respect and affection throughout Green River.

The fatal collision has left the town grappling with the sudden loss of a leader many considered a friend.

Hatt’s commitment to education extended beyond his classroom duties. He constantly sought resources to improve services and opportunities for residents. His determination reflected his commitment to overcoming the challenges facing rural communities.

“Mayor Hatt loved this community deeply, and he served it with honesty, kindness, and unwavering commitment,” city officials said in their tribute to the fallen leader.

The loss of Hatt represents more than the death of a mayor for Green River. Residents lost a teacher who shaped young minds and a neighbor who genuinely cared about improving their lives. His vision for the town’s future and his dedication to making that vision a reality had earned him strong support, as evidenced by his decisive reelection victory just weeks before the tragedy.

As Green River moves forward, the community faces the challenge of continuing the work Hatt began while honoring the memory of a leader taken too soon. The acting mayor and city council must now carry forward the initiatives and values that defined Hatt’s tenure, ensuring his legacy of service endures in the town he loved.
