David Furnish delivered a reassuring update on husband Elton Johns’ health this week, telling Variety the music icon is “battling on” despite ongoing vision problems that have challenged the 78-year-old singer throughout the past year.
Speaking ahead of the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, March 15, Furnish painted a picture of domestic contentment for the EGOT winner who stepped back from touring to focus on family life.
“He’s great. He’s battling on. He’s keeping busy and moving forward,” Furnish said of John. “He’s happy being at home as a family with our sons. That’s why he came off the road.”
Furnish and John share two sons: Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. The family has maintained a relatively private life since John concluded his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, trading sold-out stadiums for the comforts of home near Windsor Castle.
The “Rocket Man” singer has been candid about his mounting health challenges in recent years. In July 2024, John lost vision in his right eye after contracting a severe infection while vacationing in the south of France. During an appearance on Good Morning America that November, he revealed the extent of his condition: four months without sight in his right eye, and limited vision in his left.
The vision loss caps a series of health setbacks for the legendary performer. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he catalogued his ailments with characteristic humor, telling the audience he’s had surgeries on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.
“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John quipped. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”
In 2021, John suffered a painful fall that forced him to postpone several dates of his farewell tour. He underwent hip surgery followed by intensive physiotherapy to recover full mobility and return to the stage.
Despite these challenges, John remains deeply engaged with his philanthropic work. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, raises funds for HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has collected over £300 million since its founding in 1992.
This year’s event will be co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young will perform, while the guest list features an A-list roster including Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.
Furnish expressed optimism about this year’s fundraising goals, hoping to raise more than $9 million for the foundation. He acknowledged that last year presented unique challenges following the devastating Los Angeles fires in January 2025, which killed at least 31 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Altadena, creating competing philanthropic needs across Southern California.
Ticket sales are strong this year, Furnish noted, and the event will feature a unique piece of art created by Irish painter Jack Coulter. The artist painted live while John performed “Tiny Dancer” on piano—a one-of-a-kind collaboration that will be auctioned during the evening’s festivities.
John and Furnish were spotted together at Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in late 2025, accompanied by Zachary and Elijah. The rare public appearance demonstrated the family’s commitment to staying connected despite John’s ongoing health struggles.
While John has stepped away from the demands of touring, Furnish’s update suggests the singer has found peace in this new chapter of his life. He prioritizes time with his family while continuing to support the causes that have defined his legacy beyond music. For fans concerned about the beloved performer’s wellbeing, Furnish’s words offer reassurance: John remains in good spirits, surrounded by love, and keeping himself engaged despite the physical challenges he faces.
