Kimmel Destroys Melania Trump at Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel transformed his brief return to the Oscars stage into a calculated broadside against both First Lady Melania Trump’s critically savaged documentary and CBS’s recent editorial shifts, delivering some of the sharpest political commentary of Sunday night’s 98th Academy Awards.

The 58-year-old late-night host and four-time Oscars emcee presented the awards for Best Documentary Short Film and Best Documentary Feature at the Dolby Theater on March 15, 2026, using both opportunities to skewer the Trump administration and the media outlets he claims have bent to presidential pressure.

“As you know, there are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which,” Kimmel told the star-studded audience. “Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS.”

The jab targeted CBS’s transformation over the past year, which included the July 2025 announcement that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” would end in May 2026. Paramount, CBS’s parent company, also settled a lawsuit with President Donald Trump for $16 million in July 2025 over a “60 Minutes” interview—a settlement that many legal experts called unnecessary given the lawsuit’s perceived lack of merit.

But Kimmel saved his sharpest barbs for the first lady’s documentary “Melania,” which premiered at the Kennedy Center on January 29, 2025, before opening in theaters on January 30, 2025. The film, directed by Brett Ratner, has been eviscerated by critics and earned a 1.4 out of 10 rating on IMDB—with the site noting “unusual voting activity”—despite Amazon MGM Studios paying $40 million for its rights and spending another $35 million on marketing.

“Fortunately for all of us there’s an international community of filmmakers dedicated to telling the truth, oftentimes at great risk to make films that teach us, that call out injustice, that inspire us to take action,” Kimmel said. “And there are also documentaries where you walk around the White House trying on shoes.”

Before announcing the Best Documentary Feature winner, Kimmel twisted the knife further: “Oh man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung fired back on social media, calling Kimmel a “classless hack who is self-projecting his depression and sadness onto others.”

The documentary follows Melania Trump during the 20 days before President Trump’s return to office in January 2025 and has drawn sustained criticism for being light on substance while heavily focused on image and fashion. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film set a record for the largest disparity between critics’ scores (11%) and audience ratings (99%) in the platform’s history. Kimmel has repeatedly labeled the project a “vanity documentary” on his ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and questioned its reported $7 million opening weekend box office performance.

On his late-night show, Kimmel suggested the film’s sales figures may have been artificially boosted. The documentary opened on more than 1,500 screens but ended its theatrical run having earned only $16 million to $20 million—a fraction of its $75 million total cost.

The Sunday night appearance marked the latest salvo in Kimmel’s ongoing feud with President Trump, which intensified after Trump’s second inauguration. In September 2025, ABC suspended Kimmel for six days over comments he made about the reaction to the assassination of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk. The suspension came after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened action against ABC affiliates, though the show returned following widespread backlash.

Kimmel’s relationship with Trump reached a memorable flashpoint during the 2024 Oscars ceremony, when he read aloud a Truth Social post from Trump attacking his hosting mid-show. Kimmel responded from the stage: “Thank you, President Trump. Thank you for watching. Isn’t it past your jail time?”

Conan O’Brien replaced Kimmel as Oscars host starting in 2025, returning for a second consecutive year in 2026.

Despite the documentary being promoted by President Trump as “a must watch” and having its world premiere at the Kennedy Center, “Melania” lost money theatrically. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore from audiences polled in theaters—a stark contrast to the critical reception, which Metacritic summarized with a score of 5 out of 100, indicating “overwhelming dislike.”

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last week, the host also mocked the documentary’s genre positioning. “Between this and ‘Sinners,’ it’s been a big year for vampire movies,” he joked.

The Oscars moment revived a familiar dynamic between Hollywood and Trump-era politics at a ceremony that has increasingly become a venue for pointed cultural commentary. Kimmel’s presentation drew sustained applause from the Dolby Theater audience, suggesting his barbs resonated with the entertainment industry’s largely liberal demographic.
