Former President Joe Biden transformed a routine commercial flight into an impromptu meet-and-greet session, charming passengers and writing heartfelt notes as he traveled from Philadelphia to Phoenix on Wednesday, April 2.
The 83-year-old former president, who left office on January 20, 2025, sat in business class alongside former first lady Dr. Jill Biden, casually reading a newspaper just rows away from stunned fellow travelers. The encounter quickly went viral after multiple passengers shared their experiences on social media.
Villanova University freshman Cailyn, who posts under the TikTok username lattesbeforlife, captured the surreal moment when she discovered Biden sitting two rows behind her. She documented their interaction, which included a selfie with the former president flashing a wide grin and a personalized handwritten note.
Biden’s message referenced their shared connection to Villanova University, where Dr. Biden earned her Master of Arts in English. In the note, he told Cailyn it was “truly a pleasure” meeting her and noted that both she and his wife had “chosen Villanova.”
In the comments of her viral posts, Cailyn explained that Biden expressed genuine enthusiasm about her attending Villanova and immediately asked Dr. Biden to share her own experiences at the university with the young student.
Sports content creator Stephania Ergemlidze had an equally memorable encounter during the same flight. She spent approximately 10 minutes conversing with Biden, alongside her friend and cameraman Nephi, while traveling to Arizona for a charity celebrity basketball game benefiting the military with the organization Celebrity Sweat. She was also partnering with AT&T during the Women’s Final Four for March Madness.
“I was genuinely blown away with how kind and humble he was,” Ergemlidze told Newsweek.
Ergemlidze, who describes herself as politically independent, initially shared the encounter on her Instagram Stories after followers pressed her to confirm whether the former president was indeed on the plane. She later posted a picture and video on Threads that garnered thousands of reactions.
The content creator told Newsweek that she rarely posts about meeting well-known figures and had never before asked for a photo with someone she didn’t know personally. Biden asked for Ergemlidze’s business card and listened attentively as she discussed her work in sports media. She emphasized that her admiration stemmed from Biden’s personal character rather than political affiliation.
The April 2 flight marked a rare public appearance for Biden, who has maintained a lower profile since leaving the White House. Yet the interactions showcased the former president’s enduring political instincts and apparent comfort engaging with ordinary Americans—even while traveling commercially without the extensive security protocols that accompanied his presidency.
The wholesome encounters come on the heels of other Biden family news. The Bidens recently welcomed two new additions to their Delaware household when they adopted two black Lab-mix puppies named Boo and Scout. The sibling dogs, originally named Linda and Rocky, were rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Tennessee and paired with the Bidens through Humane Animal Partners, a Delaware animal welfare organization.
The organization said it helped the Bidens find the dogs after learning they were interested in two black Labrador retrievers. The puppies were hand-picked for the family and brought to the Bidens’ home on a trial basis before the adoption became official.
Both Cailyn and Ergemlidze’s posts drew largely positive reactions online, though Ergemlidze acknowledged receiving some negative responses as well. The sports creator emphasized that her decision to share the encounter stemmed from genuine admiration for Biden’s character rather than political affiliation.
For Cailyn, the unexpected meeting provided a story she’ll likely share for years to come. As she processed the surreal experience, she added one final observation that summed up the April 2 flight perfectly: “Can’t believe this isn’t an April Fools joke.”
