Speculation about tensions between First Lady Melania Trump and the extended Trump family intensified after she skipped the April 12 bridal shower for Bettina Anderson, the 39-year-old fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., held at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, according to PEOPLE.
What makes the absence especially notable is that the first lady reportedly spends significant time at the Palm Beach resort. Some observers believe Melania may have been present at Mar-a-Lago shortly before the celebration and deliberately left ahead of the event.
Anderson and Trump Jr. announced their engagement in December 2025 at a White House event, four months before the bridal shower. The president’s eldest son had previously been engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle, who currently serves as the first woman U.S. Ambassador to Greece.
The Mar-a-Lago ballroom event drew prominent Trump family women including Ivanka Trump, Tiffany Trump, Marla Maples, and socialite Erika Kirk. The first lady’s empty seat at the gathering created a conspicuous gap in what was otherwise a well-attended family affair.
Through Instagram stories, Anderson offered glimpses of the luxurious celebration. She posted images of elaborate floral arrangements and sophisticated table settings. A large mint green cake adorned with white florals became the visual focal point of the event. Donald Trump Jr. made a dramatic entrance on video, presenting roses to his future wife, while attendees dined on burrata salad and chicken roulade.
This isn’t the first Trump family milestone Melania has missed. Last April, she was notably absent from Tiffany Trump’s baby shower in Miami. The repeated pattern of no-shows has raised questions about whether the first lady is deliberately keeping her distance from Trump family gatherings or simply focusing on spending time with her son, Barron Trump, as sources have indicated.
Palm Beach sources describe Anderson as well-suited for Trump Jr.’s political future. “She is stunning, graceful, gracious, and eager to please,” one source told PEOPLE. Another insider emphasized Anderson’s traditional family values, highlighting her loyalty and devotion to the president’s eldest son.
On April 11, the couple accompanied President Trump to UFC 327 in Miami, showing they are comfortable with the public attention that accompanies the Trump brand. The White House is under consideration as a wedding venue, which would be the first wedding of a presidential child there since Tricia Nixon married in the Rose Garden in 1971.
That wedding venue plan confronts substantial hurdles. The president ordered demolition of the White House East Wing in October 2025 to create space for a grand ballroom. Judge Richard Leon issued a temporary halt to the construction on March 31, ruling the president is not the “owner” of the White House and needs Congressional approval for major structural changes. While an appeals court has temporarily permitted construction to resume until April 17 pending further review, finishing the estimated $400 million ballroom before Trump’s term concludes in 2029 would require Congressional authorization for the use of private and donor funding.
Attendees received luxury gift bags filled with premium skincare items and designer clothing, upholding the lavish expectations typical of Trump family occasions.
The first lady’s ongoing absence from family celebrations has long fed speculation about friction within the Trump family, especially rumors of a feud with Ivanka Trump, her stepdaughter. Though Melania is recognized for maintaining privacy and steering clear of public events whenever feasible, her consecutive absences from significant family occasions point to a more substantial separation from the Trump women.
As Anderson moves toward formally becoming part of one of the nation’s most prominent political dynasties, Melania’s continued non-participation in celebrations raises questions about the genuine reception awaiting the future Mrs. Trump Jr. from the current first lady.
